  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. ASUU Disagrees With VC Over Plan To Reopen Kaduna Varsity The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU has disagreed with the acting Vice-Chancellor of Kaduna State University (KASU), Prof. Abdullahi Ashafa over the plan to re-open the institution. KASU, like most other public owned universities in Nigeria has been under lock and key in the past five months over strike by university lecturers under the aegis of ASUU. But Prof. Ashafa told the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview on Friday that KASU will will reopen on July 13, to enable its final year students to write their examinations and graduate. Ashafa, added that the state government planned to provide foreign scholarships to students with outstanding Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). He said that the students, in substantial numbers, upon graduation, would be sent abroad for their masters’ degree. Terrorists Kill Ex-Kaduna Council Boss After Collecting Ransom Terrorists have killed the immediate past Secretary of the Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Abubakar Aliyu, after collecting ransom from the family. Aliyu, popularly called ‘Mai Yalo’, was abducted on his farm three weeks ago by the hoodlums. The Chairman of the Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressive Union, Kasim Kasai, confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday. Catholic church demolished in Anambra A Catholic church,Our Lady Queen of Peace has been demolished by Anambra state government task force . The Catholic church which is located by Lagos park, along Onitsha- Asaba expressway was among the churches given notice in April this year to relocate . Anambra state government has recently embarked on massive demolition of structures built on drainage and flood to channels in the bid to checkmate the menace of flood in Onitsha. Governor Soludo seems very resolved in this decision to restore Onitsha to its former glory. It is believed that the governor who even as a Catholic and knowing the enormous power the church wields in Anambra yet he has not spared two Catholic churches in the ongoing massive demolition in the state confirms he mean business. Justice Josephine Oyefeso of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Eti-Osa has convicted and sentenced a boat driver, Elebiju Happiness, alleged to have caused the death of 13 of his passengers, including two children, in a boat mishap to life imprisonment. Justice Oyefeso in her judgement held that the prosecution has successfully proved the charge of manslaughter against Happiness beyond all reasonable doubt and thereby sentenced him accordingly. The judge jailed the convict for life for manslaughter and six months’ imprisonment for operating a boat without a license. Elebiju was arraigned before  Oyefeso on an 11-count charge for captaining a boat that capsized and killed 13 persons while operating in an illegal jetty without license. The convict was in charge of a commercial boat which had an accident on July 29, 2020, at about 5:45 pm on the Lagos’ waterways around Kirikiri.
