  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. Immigration Officers, Lecturer Killed In Taraba Bandit Attacks 19 April 2023  Two immigration officers have been killed by suspected bandits along the Takum Ussa Local Government Area link road in Taraba State. Confirming the incident to Channels Television on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Abdullahi Usman said the officers were not only shot dead but had machete cuts on their bodies with their motorcycle abandoned. The officers were identified as inspectors Adike Austin and Uzo James of the Immigration Department attached to the Ussa local council checkpoint. Usman disclosed that their remains have been deposited at the morgue for autopsy with a full-scale investigation launched, adding that the killing of the immigration officers is not related to the ongoing herders/farmers crisis in the area. Fire guts Oyo Broadcasting Station 19 April 2023  The Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) is currently being gutted by fire. The fire was said to have started from the technical area of the studio. Buhari directs Immigration Boss Isah Jere to hand over 19 April 2023  President Muhammadu Buhari may have responded to the outcry of stakeholders in the Nigeria Immigration Service to halt the tenure elongation plot of the outgoing Comptroller General of the Immigration Service, Isah Jere, with Monday’s directive for him to hand over the reins of office. A 45-year-old woman, Karima Nuhu, has filed a lawsuit against her ex-husband, Musa Falalu, for allegedly failing to take her to Saudi Arabia.   The lawsuit was filed before a Shari’a Court sitting in Rigasa, Kaduna. The plaintiff who lives at Rigasa area of Kaduna, told the court that she had been married to Falalu for four years, during which he provided her with food for only two months.   She said;    “He told me that he lost his job as a driver but had secured another one in Saudi Arabia, urging me to be patient while promising to take me along. “So far, I have been feeding myself. I even borrowed money for him so that he would be able to pay for the trip, but after getting what he wanted, he divorced me.”   She told the court that she had no witnesses except God who will judge them on the last day.  The defendant, however, denied the allegations as he revealed that he had divorced the complainant.   The judge, Malam Anass Khalifa, who confirmed the divorce between the couple, said

 Aviation unions vow total airports shutdown after 7 days 19 April 2023  The striking aviation unions on Tuesday vowed to have a total shutdown of the airports after seven days as they staged a procession to the international wing of the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA). Security operatives also took over the venue of the protest where the unions converged on Monday, the first day of their two-day warning strike when the barricaded access roads. The strike is unnecessary as it will increase the hardship on our citizens, affect flight schedules, lead to economic losses and negatively impact on our rating globally. 3. 3,298 inmates on death row in Nigeria — NCoS 19 April 2023  No fewer than 3,298 inmates across the custodial centres in Nigeria are on death row, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), has revealed. Its Public Relations Officer, Mr Abubakar Umar, who disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, however said that the term ‘condemned criminal’ had been abrogated. With the emergence of the NCoS Act 2019 which made the prisons correctional centres, the term ‘condemned criminal’ was abrogated as it is stigmatising, he explained. He said that the service preferred to use a more friendly term of ‘Inmates on Death Row (IDR)’.
