 Outcries Over State Recognised Vigilantes In North-West   The security outfits established by various state governments, especially in the North-West, are being accused of indiscriminate arrests and killing of suspects, as well as innocent people without recourse to judicial processes, findings by Daily Trust Saturday revealed. But those charged with the responsibility of managing the outfits have debunked the claims of extrajudicial killings, though some admitted what they described as “overzealousness” by some of the operatives. It was alleged that in some states, long lists of suspected bandits, their supporters or sympathisers have been arrested and ultimately killed, and such acts are allegedly being carried out without recourse to the police and other law enforcement agencies. NIGERIAN AIR FORCE DEGRADES ARMED BANDIT KINGPIN’S HIDEOUTS IN SHAMASHALE, RUGU FOREST IN ZAMFARA STATE.{PHOTO}.#PRESS RELEASE.

      The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Air Task Force (ATF) for Operation DIRAN MIKIYA, on 15 and 18 August 2018, successfully degraded several identified hideouts of a notorious armed bandit kingpin. The attacks, which were executed in support of ground troops in Sector 2 of Operation SHARAN DAJI, were planned based on credible intelligence that the kingpin and his g roup of armed bandits were using an abandoned primary school in SHAMASHALE as well as some makeshift settlements in nearby RUGU Forest in the Eastern part of ZAMFARA State as bases for their operations. The attack at SHAMASHALE was conducted on 15 August 2018, following further confirmatory Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions that revealed the presence of several armed bandits in the area.        The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC has been drawn to a news report entitled, Magu's Chief of Staff Under Investigation for Bribery and Unalwful Enrichment, which was published by online news platforms, First Weekly Magazine, and Nigeriannewsdirect, alleging that Mr. Ola Olukoyede, Chief of Staff to Ibrahim Magu, acting chairman EFCC, is under investigation for alleged corruption. The publicat ions purports that Mr. Olukoyede defrauded some prominent "Nigerian(sic)...under the guise of assisting (sic) to curry (sic) from his boss, Ibrahim Magu." It went on to list an unnamed former Nigerian State governor and a prominent Chief from the southwest among his alleged victims. The latter, the publications claimed, lost N100m to the Chief of Staff! 3RD MAINLAND BRIDGE TO BE TEMPORARILY SHUT FOR FOUR DAYS FROM AUGUST 23RD-26TH – LASG.{PHOTO}.#PRESS RELEASE.

       The Lagos State Government has said that the 3rd Mainland Bridge will be temporarily shut down for four days starting from midnight of August 23 to midnight of August 26, 2018 for Investigative Maintenance Test to be carried out. The State’s Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Ade Akinsanya, who disclosed this in a statement, said the decision was taken after due consultation with the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing. The four-day closure, according to Akinsanya, will enable the contractors assess the true state of the bridge after which works would commence by the end of the year or early in 2019. It would be recalled that the Federal Government had earlier announced plans to shut the bridge in July, but had to be shelved after due consultation with the State Government and wide deliberations with other stakeholders, who expressed concern about the indiscriminate parking of articulated vehicles on other alternative routes which would have adver

      THE Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in   Nigeria   has described former Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN). Mr   Kofi Annan   as a statesmen and father of African humanitarianism.        President   Muhammadu Buhari   on Saturday transmitted a letter to the National Assembly informing them of his resumption of duties as president. Garba Shehu, the president’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, confirmed this in a statement in Abuja on Saturday. According to Mr Shehu, the transmission of the letter to the two arms of the legislature — the Senate and the House of Representatives — followed the completion of his 10-day working leave. KANO GOVT EMPOWERS 8,000 YOUTHS WITH N275M.{PHOTO}.

    The Kano State Government has spent the sum of N275 million on youths empowerment, the state Governor, Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, has said. Ganduje stated this in Kano on Saturday during the flag-off of its newly introduced cash transfer disbursement to 8, 800 youths at the Government House, Kano. According to him, the gesture was to enable the beneficiaries to start their own businesses in order to become self-reliant. “The programme is driven by the need to encourage our youths to be self-employed and to establish their own businesses. “A total of 8,800 youths drawn from across the 44 local governments of the state will benefit from the empowerment and each of them will receive N20,000. “Another set of 6, 600 comprising women only will also benefit from the programme and each of them will get N15,000,” Ganduje said.
