The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. Gov Namadi Appoints Adamu Sabo as JISEPA Managing Director Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa state has approved the appointment of Adamu Sabo as the new Managing Director, Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency JISEPA. This was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the Government of Jigawa State, Malam Bala Ibrahim in Dutse, the Jigawa State Capital.  The appointment of the new Managing Director followed the retirement of the former Managing Director, Engineer Ahmed Lawal from service on 24th December, 2023. Until his appointment, Adamu Sabo, is the Director Environmental Health and is also currently running the affairs of the Agency in acting capacity. The statement explains that the appointment of the appointee is based on merit, competence and personal integrity.  It says that Adamu Sabo became a part of the State Civil Service in 1998 as an Environmental Health Officer. Egypt's Salah ruled out for 3-4 weeks due to injury Egypt's Mohamed Salah has been ruled out for three to four weeks due to a hamstring injury. Mohamed Salah has returned to England for treatment on a hamstring tear to give him the best possible chance to be available for the Africa Cup of Nations final, should Egypt make it, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said on Tuesday. Salah was forced to watch from the stands as Egypt secured their passage to the last 16 of the competition in dramatic fashion on Monday after a 2-2 draw with Cape Verde. Lawyers to Mr Joshua Aloba, the father of late singer, llerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, have written the Coroner inquiring into the controversial death to summon Ayobami Fisayo (popularly known as Spending), Boluwatife Adeyemo (popularly known as Darosha) and Ibrahim Owodunni (popularly known as Prime Boy) to testify and give eyewitness accounts of the events that led to the death of the singer. By a letter dated Jan. 15th, 2024 and signed by one of the lawyers, Emmanuel Oroko, the application for issuance of summons on the three proposed witnesses says the testimonies of all three persons would provide more factual evidence and shed better light on the unnatural and suspicious circumstances of Sept. 12, 2023, upon which a coroner inquest has been set up.  Martin Luther King's Son, Dexter Scott King Dies At 62  The younger son of a civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr, Dexter Scott King, has died after battling prostate cancer.  His death was disclosed in a statement shared on the King Centre's Facebook page late Monday.  The King Centre in Atlanta, which Dexter King served as chairperson, said the 62-year-old son of the civil rights leader died at his California home.  According to his wife, Leah Weber King, he died peacefully in his sleep.  Born in Atlanta on January 30, 1961, Dexter King was named for the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Alabama where his father once served as pastor.  He was seven years old when his father, Martin Luther King Jr, was assassinated in 1968. TROOPS RAID TERRORISTS' HIDEOUT IN KEBBI STATE RESCUE KIDNAPPED PERSONS  Troops of  8 Division, Nigerian Army, in conjunction with operatives of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) including local vigilantes in the early hours of today raided terrorists' camp and successfully rescued 4 kidnapped persons and recovered arms and ammunition. The raid operation was conducted in the identified terrorists' hideout at Sabon Gari Village in Shanga LGA of Kebbi state. During the operation, troops neutralized one of the terrorists and extricated 4  kidnap victims. The troops also recovered 3 AK 47 rifles, 3 Magazines, 142 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition and 2 pairs of camouflage uniforms. All the rescued victims who are 4 males have since been reunited with their families, while troops continued to trail the wounded and fleeing terrorists. INEC set for Sokoto rerun election The Independent National Electoral Commission, Sokoto State office has expressed its readiness for rancour-free re-run elections in 46 polling units within the state. Following the appeal court nullification of some of the elections in the state, the INEC subsequently fixed February 3rd for the re-run according to judicial pronouncement across the country. A statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday by the Public Affairs Officer, INEC office in Sokoto, Muhammad Hassan Ka’oje, said the Court ordered re-run elections in the 46 polling units across Yabo/Shagari federal constituency, Bodinga North and Tambuwal West state constituencies of the state. While assuring electorates in the affected polling units of adequate preparation to ensure everyone exercises their franchise, the statement noted that only voters with permanent voter cards that are registered in the affected polling units are qualified to vote in the election.

FG to fund student loan scheme through education tax – FIRS Chairman The Federal Government says the Student Loan Scheme will be funded through the Education Tax Fund, under the Federal Inland Revenue Service. Police teargas sacked PDP Plateau lawmakers Police operatives on Tuesday teargassed the 16 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of the Plateau Assembly sacked by the Court of Appeal. The incident occurred as the lawmakers and their supporters were getting ready to resume plenary sessions at the Rayfield Old Government House in Jos. The Government House was overrun by police and other security personnel, who prevented the dismissed lawmakers from entering the House of Assembly’s Chambers. However, the lawmakers promised not to leave the building.

Mutfwang imposes 24-hour curfew on Plateau council Governor Caleb Mutfwang has declared a 24-hour curfew on Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State due to the deteriorating security conditions in the area. Gyang Bere, the Governor’s spokesperson, in a statement explained the move was to prevent breakdown of law and order in the local government following discussions with security agencies. He urged residents to observe the sit-at-home directive while only those who must travel inside the local government area for urgent needs are permitted to do so.  The Governor bemoaned the fact that in spite of government attempts to curtail terror elements’ activities, certain persons remain determined to sow seeds of fear throughout the state. He said that the curfew will be revisited as soon as the security situation improves.

Slain Nabeeha bagged first class at ABU – Uncle Sherifdeen Al-Kadriyar, one of the uncles of late Nabeeha Al-Kadriyah, who was brutally murdered by bandits last Friday, said she graduated with a first class from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.  He said she would have been awarded the honour at the school’s convocation slated for January 27. He also said the release of Nabeeha’s remaining sisters late Saturday evoked bittersweet memories within the family. He said: “You can imagine such a feeling if she had been alive to witness the convocation. However, the situation has further strengthened our faith in Almighty Allah. “We thank all those that stood by us during this trying period. “I was the one who went to claim the body of the late Nabeeha. She was brutally murdered and her sister, Najeeba, was forced to see her brutal corpse to traumatise her and others for us to quickly pay the ransom.’’

Over 30,000 passport applicants successful, says Immigration Comptroller General The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (CGI), Caroline Wura-Ola Adepoju, has disclosed that about 32,462 persons have successfully applied for passports since the inception of the full automation system of application. The automated regime was flagged off on January 8, 2024, by the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, launched the automated passport application process to expedite passport acquisition for Nigerians.  The process includes: uploading passport photos and supporting documents.  Adepoju while inspecting facilities of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Victoria Island, Lagos, on Monday, announced that the NIS has successfully received 32, 462 applicants with the new automated system while 1,438 applications have been queried for various reasons.
