 Court adjourns case seeking to sack 27 pro-Wike lawmakers A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt has adjourned till June 3, 2024 the hearing for a suit filed by members of the Rivers State Civil Society Organisation seeking to sack 27 lawmakers of the State House of Assembly. When the parties arrived at the Court for hearing on the matter on Friday, the Clerk of the court informed them that the Judge, Justice Stephen Daylop Pam was indisposed and a new date was picked. The CSO’s had approached the court to seek interpretation of Section 109 of the 1999 Constitution and whether the lawmakers, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress still have legal rights to remain as lawmakers of their constituencies. The CSO’s led by the Rivers State Chairman, Enefaa Georgewill also want the court to restrain Governor Siminalayi Fubara from representing the 2024 budget to the lawmakers who defected. EFCC CHAIRMAN JAILED FOR DISOBEYING COURT ORDER. (PHOTO).

EFCC chairman jailed for disobeying court order The Kogi State High Court has ordered the remand of the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Abdulrasheed Bawa, for disobeying court order. The court also directed the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba, to effect Bawa’s arrest and remand him in Kuje prison for the next 14 days until he purges himself of the contempt. Justice R.O. Ayoola gave the order in a judgement delivered on Monday after granting the application for committal to prison of the EFCC chairman for disobeying a court ruling delivered on November 30, 2022, when Bawa was directed to produce the applicant in the case, Ali Bello. Bello had dragged Bawa to court for arresting and detaining him illegally, with the court ruling in his favour before the EFCC later arraigned him for alleged money laundering three days after the ruling. The EFCC’s applications for setting aside and stay of execution of the ruling were refused for want of merit

Naira scarcity: CBN moves to decongest ATMs, banking halls, meets banks, telcos The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has intensified its effort to end the long queues in banking halls and Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). Speaking at the weekend, Atiku Muhammed-Nasir, Director, Security Service of the apex bank, agents will be deployed to some commercial banks premises to facilitate its new naira swap policy, especially in some states where banking services is at its lowest ebb. He said the measure will help decongest the banking halls and ATMs of hordes of customers scrambling for the new naira notes. “The exercise has helped a great deal as the scrambling has reduced considerably. We are optimistic that in the coming days, the situation will improve,” he said. Meanwhile, the CBN will meet with deposit money banks (DMBs), mobile money operators, and telecommunications companies in the coming days to address the excess withdrawal charges by Point of Sale (PoS) operators in the country. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday declared seven days of national mourning for the victims of an earthquake that killed at least 2,600 people in his country and neighboring Syria. “A national mourning period has been declared for seven days. Our flag will be hoisted at half-mast until sunset on Sunday, February 12, 2023, in all our national and foreign representative offices,” Erdogan said in a tweet. The most powerful earthquake to strike Turkey and Syria in nearly a century killed over 2,300 people on Monday, sparked frantic rescues and was felt as far away as Greenland. Watch video below.

  Machina Loses As Supreme Court a Affirms Lawan As Yobe APC Senatorial Candidate The supreme court has affirmed Senate President Ahmad Lawan as the All Progressives Congress (APC) senatorial candidate for Yobe north. In a majority judgment delivered on Monday, the apex court allowed the appeal filed by the APC against Bashir Machina’s candidature. Delivering the judgment, three out of a five-member panel agreed with the position of the APC that the suit at the trial court ought not to have commenced via an originating summons since it contained allegations of fraud. “The bedrock of the suit shows that there were allegations of fraudulent practices against the appellants,” Centus Nweze said.

Second earthquake hits Turkey after more than 1,000 killed A rescue operation is under way across much of southern Turkey and northern Syria following a huge earthquake that has killed more than 1,000 people. The 7.8 magnitude quake struck near Gaziantep in the early hours of Monday while people were asleep. A new 7.5-magnitude tremor hit at around 13:30 local time (10:30 GMT), which officials said was "not an aftershock". Turkey's President Erdogan said 912 people had been killed in Turkey alone after the first quake, with more than 5,300 wounded. Syrian authorities are reporting more than 370 deaths. Rescuers are racing to save people trapped beneath the rubble after hundreds of buildings collapsed in both countries. World leaders have pledged to send aid after Turkey issued an international appeal for help. Millions of people across Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Cyprus and Israel felt the earthquake. (BBC)

Nigerian player collapses, dies during match in Spain 6 February 2023  A Nigerian player, Ado Hadi, with CD Madridejos in the Spanish Terceira division, collapsed and died during his side’s home match against SP Cabanillas on Sunday. In a Castilla-La Mancha Football Federation statement, Hadi reportedly collapsed “for no apparent reasons” in the 39th minute of the ill-fated match, a report by The Nation says. The medical team on the ground at the Municipal Toledo ground immediately came to his aide but efforts to revive him proved abortive as he was later pronounced dead minutes after. “The Castilla-La Mancha Football Federation and Castilian-La Mancha football, with its President Pablo Burillo at the helm, are totally dismayed at such an event,” the statement added. “For this reason, the federative body remains at the disposal of CD Madridejos for everything it needs in these difficult times.” The 21-year-old Hadi last played in Nigeria with Jigawa Golden Stars according media reports

Oba of Benin sacks monarch 6 February 2023  The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has sacked Mr Edomwonyi Iduozee Ogiegbaen as the Enogie of Egbaen Siluko in Ovia North East LGA of Edo State. Ogiegbaen’s sack came after he was removed as chief coordinator to the palace on Enigie matters in January, 2023, over alleged rebellion, dereliction of duty and uprising in the Enigie fold in Benin Kingdom.
