A refugee from war-torn Syria has made history after he was sworn in as mayor of a German town. Ryyan Alshebl took the oath as mayor of Ostelsheim, a town 30km (18.6 miles) from the city of Stuttgart, in a solemn municipal council meeting on Friday evening. In April, the citizens of the Swabian community of 2,500 inhabitants elected Alshebl as the new head of the town hall with an absolute majority of 55.4 percent. JAMB vs Mmesoma: Shame on you – Onanuga attacks supporters of UTME candidate Bayo Onanuga, a former media aide to President Bola Tinubu has criticized those who supported 19-year-old candidate of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Examination, JAMB, Mmesoma Ejikeme. He noted that they should have considered JAMB’s version before supporting Mmesoma. Mmesoma had claimed to have scored 362 to emerge the highest candidate in the 2023 UTME, but JAMB denied her claim. I deliberately waited for the end of this investigation before commenting on this unfortunate case of our daughter, Mmesoma Ejikeme.  She’s a brilliant girl, judging by her actual score of 249. The nation should be careful not to destroy her. What she needs is counselling, correction and guidance. She obviously did not know the weight and gravity of what she was doing. As teenagers, most of us made juvenile mistakes that never came to light. The parents should encourage her to do a public apology to JAMB, to her family and to Nigerians after which she should be allowed to get her admission based on her actual scores. Anyone still pushing other narratives over this issue is not helping her and her family. It is time to close this very unfortunate chapter and move on. This is my plea. - Festus Keyamo

Police arrest 50 Enugu university students 8th Jul 2023  Over 50 students of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have been arrested by men of the state Police Command. The Students Union Government (SUG) President of the institution, Donatus Okolieuwa disclosed this on Saturday. He said that the students were picked up by the anti-cult squad on Friday evening in the university campus. Okolieuwa who described the arrest of the students as detestable and condemnable, appealed to Governor Peter Mbah to wade into the matter to enable the affected students regain their freedom. “We therefore call on our kind-hearted Governor, His Excellency Dr Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, to intervene in this matter, and use his good office to facilitate the release of our students. 110,000 Americans died last year of drug overdose, says US 8th Jul 2023  The United States lost nearly 110,000 of its citizens to drug overdose in 2022, Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken has said. The economic toll, he said, was nearly $1.5 trillion in the United States in 2020 alone. Blinken was speaking at the weekend to the senior government officials from more than 80 countries, as well as leaders from over a dozen regional and international organisations during the the launch of the Global Coalition to Address Synthetic Drug Threats. Nigerian man begins 200hrs singing marathon to break world record A Nigerian man, Oluwatobi Kufeji, has embarked on the longest singing marathon in his quest to set a new Guinness World Record. The marathon kicked off in Lagos on July 5 and is expected to run until July 13.
