 Noise pollution: Lagos seals five churches, 19 hotels The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency has temporarily shut down no fewer than five churches and 19 hotels over noise pollution between March 23 and April 26  Calculations by our correspondent also showed that no fewer than four markets and shopping complexes were also shut down over noise pollution and other environmental infractions. NNPC should be audited, President shouldn’t be petroleum minister – Sanusi Former emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has called for the audit of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited. Sanusi made this known while speaking at the Bank Directors’ Association of Nigeria conference, in Abuja. He said the country needs to beam the searchlight on NNPC in the areas of revenue generation and oil production. Sanusi said, “The finance minister can not tell you because he doesn’t have a metering system that reports to him. “The finance minister can not tell you that today, this is how many barrels of oil that we produce and export here. He can only rely on NNPC telling him. Those barrels are revenue; they belong to finance. We have been talking about this for 10 years. Coup: ECOWAS Court declines Niger’s request to suspend sanctions ECOWAS Court of Justice has, on Thursday, dismissed a request by the Republic of Niger for the Court to suspend sanctions imposed by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government on Niger. The request for interim measures is part of a broader case brought by the Republic of Niger and seven other applicants challenging the legality of sanctions imposed by ECOWAS following a military coup in the West African country in July 2023 that overthrew the government of President Mohammed Bazoum. The Court, in the ruling delivered by Justice Edward Amoako Asante, acknowledged that it has prima facie jurisdiction over the substantive application. But the Court ruled that it could not grant the request for interim measures since the additional requirement for the case to be prima facie admissible had not been met. Naira falls to N1200/$ in parallel market, gains 11% in NAFEM The naira depreciated yesterday to N1,1200 per dollar in the parallel market from N1,172 per dollar on Wednesday. However, the naira yesterday appreciated to N843.07 per dollar in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NAFEM). Data from FMDQ showed that the indicative exchange rate for NAFEM fell to N843.07 per dollar from N951.22 per dollar on Wednesday, indicating 11 percent or N108.15 appreciation for the naira. As a result, the gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates widened to N356.93 per dollar yesterday from N220.78 per dollar on Wednesday. Mr. Yakubu Ahmed, a black market trader said high demand for dollars still persists despite traders’ anticipation of a positive change in the trend of the foreign exchange rate. “There is still high demand for dollars but little access to it. Falola. The NJC said he was found guilty of granting a garnishee order absolute against Polaris Bank for the sum of N283,174,000.00 in a questionable manner. A statement by the Director of Information, NJC, Adesoji Oye, said the investigation committee found that Falola travelled to Lagos to visit the counsel for the bank on the issue of garnishee proceedings, an action it described as unprofessional. Naira scarcity hits Abuja as ATMs fail to dispense cash  Some parts of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, are beginning to experience paucity of the Naira as Nigerians approach Christmas. No fewer than seven commercial banks in the AYA area of Abuja failed to dispense cash on Thursday. A correspondent, who visited these ATMs on Thursday evening, reports that he could not withdraw, and it has been the case for about a week. Our correspondent, however, observed that Point of Sales, POS, operators lined up in their numbers in front of those banks to make brisk business. One of the POS operators, who identified himself as Samuel, lamented that the ATMs have not been dispensing cash as expected. He noted that cash was only available at certain hours of the day. “Since we entered December these ATMs have not been dispensing as much. “There is naira scarcity and most likely it may be because we are approaching December, but only CBN can explain this new scarcity,” he said.  Lagos State Government Seals RCCG Parish, Other Churches, Mosques, Hotels Over Noise Pollution The Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu-led Lagos State government has sealed a parish of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Ifelodun Mosque and several other churches and worship centres in the state over noise pollution.
