 Fire guts LP chairman Abure’s house in Abuja The Labour Party (LP) has said the residence of its National Chairman, Julius Abure was gutted by fire on Wednesday.  The party also claimed that there was an assassination attempt on Abure.  The National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh said Abure’s residence was “gutted by a mysterious fire which started a few minutes after 1am while Abure and the members of his family were asleep.” The statement quoted a member of the family who narrated the incident, saying the family was woken up by neighbours and security men living in the compound.  Sunday Igboho drags Gani Adams to court, seeks N500m damages Yoruba Nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, aka Sunday Igboho, has dragged the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, to court over alleged defamation of character. Igboho dragged Adams before an Oyo High Court sitting in Ibadan, through his team of lawyers led by J. A.Sanusi. The separatist leader prayed that the court should award a compensation of N500 million against Adams for alleged defamatory statements against him. Igboho said Adams accused him of being a serial killer and assassin for top politicians, including President Bola Tinubu, in an audio conversation in 2021. Among others, Igboho prayed for an order of the court “for the payment of exemplary and aggravated damages in the sum of Five Hundred Million Naira (N500,000,000.00) in favour of the Claimant for defamation of the person of the Claimant by the Defendant.  Nathaniel Bassey petitions IGP over alleged defamation Gospel singer Nathaniel Bassey has filed a petition to the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun against four persons who accused him of paternity fraud. Bassey tasked the office of the IGP to investigate and prosecute for criminal defamation and cyberstalking. The singer submitted the petition to the IGP on April 1, 2024, through his lawyers, Peter Abraham, Uche Matthew, Gbenga Agunloye and Anthony Abia. The Nation reported that four social media users alleged that Bassey fathered the son of a fellow popular gospel singer, Mercy Chinwo.  Whatsapp services down globally WhatsApp, the popular instant communication app owned by Meta, is currently experiencing technical difficulties.   There is currently a disruption in the messaging service of WhatsApp, which was first noticed a few minutes past 7pm, causing users to be unable to send or receive messages. The outage was reported globally as foreign news media platforms like The Jerusalem Express and the Indian Post reported the outage.

  President Tinubu Signs Students Loan Amendment Bill into Law President Bola Tinubu has officially sanctioned and enacted the amendment bill for National Student Loans. The legislation was ratified at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. The Senate had previously approved the Student Loan (Access to Higher Education) Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill, 2024, in March 2024. This action ensued after the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) reviewed and endorsed a report, which Senator Muntari Dandutse (APC, Katsina South), the committee’s chairman, presented during a plenary session.  CAS Rejects IBA’s Appeal To Organise Olympic Boxing The Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday threw out an appeal from the International Boxing Association (IBA) after it was stripped of its rights to organise boxing events at the Paris Olympics. The International Olympic Committee withdrew its recognition of boxing’s governing body, the IBA, last year due to longstanding concerns over governance issues. In its ruling explaining the decision to dismiss the IBA appeal, the CAS panel said the organisation “had not increased its financial transparency and sustainability”. CAS, which is sport’s highest court, also said “the IBA had not changed its process relating to referees and judges to ensure its integrity”, nor had it fully implemented other proposed reforms. Instead, the IOC has put in place the Paris Boxing Unit to ensure qualification and hosting of the sport at the 2024 Paris Games. Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, the police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi revealed that they cannot be arrested because it is a very tricky situation. He established that cross-dressing is not yet a punishable offence in Nigeria.  Five feared dead, others injured as security operatives engage gunmen in Anambra At least five persons were killed and others injured during a gun duel between security operatives and gunmen on Tuesday in Anambra. The incident took place when the Anambra Joint Security Force, JSF, invaded two camps of the gunmen in Aguluezechukwu, Aguata council area and Ogboji, Orumba South council area respectively. It was gathered that during the raid by the security operatives, some items like locally fabricated rocket launchers, charms, police uniforms among others were recovered. Though Anambra police spokesman Ikenga Tochukwu did not disclose the casualty figures, it learnt that four gunmen and a police operative died during the shootout. A statement by the Police Command in Awka on Wednesday explained the hunt for the gunmen had been extended to Obofia Forest, Aguluezechukwu and Ogboji areas.

 Naira appreciates at official market, gains 2.4% The Naira gained at the official market, trading at N1,278.58 to a dollar on Tuesday. Data from the official trading platform of the FMDQ revealed that the Naira gained N30.81 or 2.35 per cent, compared to the previous trading date on Thursday, March, 28, 2024 just before the Easter holiday at the rate of N1,309.39 against the dollar. However, the total turnover reduced to $111.18 million on Tuesday, down from $857.78 Million recorded on Thursday, March 28, 2024. Meanwhile, at the Investor’s and Exporters’ (I&E) window, the Naira traded between N1,312.00 and N1,250.00 against the dollar.

 Dangote crashes diesel price, sets date to supply petrol Dangote Petroleum Refinery has forced down the pump price of Automotive Gas Oil, a.k.a diesel to around N1,350/litre in some locations across the country following its own price of N1,225/litre. The price of the product had risen to about N1,700/litre before the current fall. The $20bn worth refinery started pumping out diesel to the domestic market last Wednesday. According to the newspaper, the company sold a minimum of one million litres to each registered oil marketer that got the product from the plant since it commenced diesel sale. Officials of the multi-billion dollar plant and oil dealers confirmed that the product was dispensed to marketers at between N1,225/litre and N1,300/litre depending on the volume of purchase. Lagos State Taskforce has impounded 359 commercial motorcycles popularly known as Okada dislodge and dislodged defiant squatters who erected shanties along the rail tracks at Fagba axis of Lagos. This exercise is a follow up to the move to clear the railway after the launch of the Red rail Line  project by Lagos State Government.  Former NLC president, Ciroma is dead A former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Ali Ciroma has died. Ciroma died at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, Maiduguri, Borno State capital, on Tuesday. A family member, who is also the Secretary of the Borno State Council, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ali Ibrahim Ciroma, announced the death of the veteran unionist in a statement on Tuesday. “It is with deep sorrow that I announce the death of Comrade Ali Ciroma, former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress. “The sad event occurred this evening (Tuesday, April 2) at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. “The burial for the repose of the deceased will be held tomorrow Wednesday 4pm at the residence of the deceased No.7A along Galadima Road near Muhammadu Shuwa Memorial Hospital (Nursing Home), Maiduguri”, the statement reads.  Binance, two officials for arraignment Thursday over alleged money laundering, tax infractions A Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled the arraignment of Binance Holdings Limited with two of its officials – Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla – for Thursday. It was learnt that the firm, Gambaryan and  Anjarwalla (who escaped from lawful custody on March 22 and the country) will be arraigned before Justice Emeka Nwite on two separate charges. The one filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), bordering money laundering, has five counts. The other, filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has four counts, in which they were accused on sundry tax infractions. The Nation learnt that Anjarwalla will be arraigned in absentia.  Reps summon KFC over discrimination against ex-gov Gbenga Daniel’s son The House of Representatives Committee on Disabilities has summoned the management of Kentucky Fried Chicken, KFC, over allegations of discriminatory treatment towards Mr Adebola Daniel, a person living with a disability and son of former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel. Chairman of the committee, Bashiru Ayinla, announced this decision while briefing newsmen at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja, on Tuesday. Ayinla, representing Oshodi/Isolo-1 Federal Constituency, Lagos State, vowed that the committee would ensure that any violation of the Disability Act is met with appropriate punishment under the law.  Ondo AGF Ajulo clarifies appointment of 273 lawyers as advisers Ondo Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, on Tuesday clarified the appointment of 273 lawyers by his office. Ajulo explained that most of the appointees are honorary and not entitled to collect a dime from Ondo State Government. The Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) made the clarification over some criticism that followed announcement of the appointments.  FIRS apologises to Christians for offensive Easter message The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has apologised to Christians over a flyer posted on its social media handle. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed disapproval of the flyer posted by FIRS for Easter. The flyer titled: “Jesus paid your debts, not your taxes” sparked widespread condemnation from many Nigerians who viewed it as disrespectful to the significance of Easter. Responding to the criticism, FIRS in a statement by Dare Adekanmbi, Special Adviser Media to the FIRS chairman emphasised that it never intended to denigrate Jesus Christ or diminish the importance of His sacrifice.  The FIRS acknowledged its role as a responsible government agency and its awareness of Easter’s core message.  Adekanmbi explained “the flyer’s purpose was to engage taxpayers in a unique way, reminding them of their civic duty – prioritising tax payments”.  Pandemonium as Osun hunter shoots resident dead There was pandemonium in Iwo community on Tuesday after a yet-to-be-named local hunter shot a resident dead and attempted to dispose his corpse. It was learnt around 3am the local hunter killed a man and while attempting to flee with the corpse was caught by some indigenes.  Three die in Swiss Alps helicopter crash Police in the United States of America have confirmed the death of three persons in a helicopter crash on the Petit Combin Mountain in the Swiss Alps. The Wallis Regional Police Force, in a statement on Tuesday, revealed that the B3-type helicopter crashed at a landing site during a heliski drop-off. The statement read, “Having reached the summit of a mountain culminating at 3,668 metres above sea level, for a reason that the investigation will have to determine, the aircraft slid down the northern slope. “On board were the pilot, a mountain guide and his four clients. Their identities have not been released. ”Seven helicopters were sent to the site as part of the rescue effort.” The police further revealed that two injured persons were quickly treated before being airlifted to a hospital in the Wallis cantonal capital Sion, while a third person was subsequently also rescued. The police added that three other occupants of the aircraft were unfo
