  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. EFCC Arrests 23 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Sokoto Operatives of the Sokoto Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, have arrested twenty three( 23) suspected internet fraudsters.   The suspects are: Joy Ofem, Azeez Naimot,  Agabi O. Yusuf, Ibrahim Amodu, Aigbekan Daniel, Adedayo Michael, Iraran Mubarak, Olivine Habiblah,Wasiu Lukman Adekunle, Musa Abdulazeez, Abdullahi Ibrahim, Adegoh Nabiu Mohammed, Ibrahim Mubarak, Ahmed Ibrahim Abdullahi,  Abdullahi Sanusi Adejoh, Umar Idris,  Muhammad Nuhu, Feisal Ahmed, Aliyu Ismail, Elijah Adebayo, Zakariyau Ibrahim, Balogun Abdulkarim and Buni Husaini.   They were arrested on Friday, August 25, 2023 at Bafarawa and Kalkalawa estates in Sokoto. Their arrest followed diligent observance and intelligence on their suspected involvement in internet- related crimes.  Items recovered from them include two Toyota Corolla cars, three motor cycles, laptops, phones and a generator. Abducted pastor (chartered accountant) mistaken as kidnapper, killed in the forest during rescue operation 26th Aug 2023 The family of Pastor Adeniyi Adisa, a chartered accountant, has demanded for justice over the murder of their son, whom they alleged died in the hands of some youths and the police in Ogun State. It was gathered that the father of five was kidnapped on June 24 as he returned from a visit to a friend in the Yotomi area, Owode Egba area of the state. The deceased, who was the General Manager of VGC Water in Lekki, Lagos, was held hostage by his abductors for several days until his body was eventually found deposited outside a morgue in Ogun State. He was buried in Ibadan on July 8, 2023. However, the deceased’s younger brother, Musiliu Adisa, told Saturday PUNCH that Adeniyi was murdered by some irate youths in Abule-Ori community and some security operatives who falsely labelled him a kidnapper. NCDC monitoring new COVID-19 subvariants, to start testing in four states 26th Aug 2023  The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) says it is monitoring the new subvariants of the Omicron variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, named EG.5 and BA.2.86. In a statement on Saturday, the health agency said its COVID-19 Technical Working Group has been monitoring emerging variants from local to global level. “Our influenza sentinel surveillance sites continue to provide information on COVID-19 prevalence in patients with influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory illness,” the statement partly read. “We have not observed any increase in trend of COVID-19 in this patient group. FIFA Suspend Spanish Football Chief Rubiales August 26, 2023 FIFA suspended Luis Rubiales as president of Spain’s football federation on Saturday for kissing Spanish Women’s World Cup player Jenni Hermoso on the lips, and banned him from making contact with her. “(We) decided today to provisionally suspend Mr. Luis Rubiales from all football-related activities at national and international level,” said world football’s governing body in a statement, explaining it would last 90 days, pending their disciplinary proceedings.

NHRC Records Over 2,000 Human Rights Violations Cases In Kwara National Human Rights commission (NHRC) in Kwara state says it has recorded over two thousand cases of human rights abuses and violations this year. The state coordinator, of the Commisssion, Barrister Jumoke Olaoye stated this while speaking at the Biennial Convention of the Committee for the Defence of Human Right(CDHR) Kwara state Chapter ,held in Ilorin. She said the most prevalent of the human right abuses recorded are child abandonment and wife battering. Barrister Olaoye said increased in awareness on the activities of the Commisssion made people to voiced out violations against their right. She explained that the Commisssion has adopted the use of mediation to reduce the cases of human rights abuses to the minimum. Anambra pastor comm!ts suic!de after lover jilted him A pastor of a Pentecostal Church in Nnewi, Anambra State, identified as Pastor Prosper Igboke, has committed suicide as he jumped down from a two-storey building in Nnewi. Punch reports that  Igboke jumped down from the building and died instantly after he was jilted by his lover, who he had spent so much money on.  A relative of the deceased said the 30-year-old man from Leru community in Umunneochi Local Government Area, Abia State, had trained his lover in the University, after which she declined his marriage proposal. The incident happened last month. The man (Igboke) was 30 years old at the time of his death. His girlfriend, whom he intended to marry disappointed him after seeing her through the university. He jumped down from a two-storey building and died.
