The Saudi authorities have released Zainab Aliyu, a Nigerian student falsely accused of drug trafficking in Saudi Arabia. The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, disclosed the development at a news conference in Abuja on Tuesday. According to him, the Saudi government had established the innocence of Zainab and the second Nigerian involved in the case, Ibrahim Abubakar will be released tomorrow to the Nigerian Mission in Saudi Arabia. On Monday the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Diaspora, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said President Muhammadu Buhari had directed the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, to facilitate her release. Zainab Aliyu, a student of Yusuf Maitama Sule University, Kano, who travelled for Lesser Hajj in December 2018, was detained by the Saudi authorities for alleged possession of illicit drugs, which could earn her death sentence according to the law of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
