 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud. Labour Party wins first governorship seat Alex Otti of the Labour Party is now the Governor-Elect of Abia State. Otti polled a total of 175, 467 votes defeat his closest rival, Chief Okey Ahiwe of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party who scored 88,529 votes. Enyinnaya Nwafor of the Young Peoples Party, YPP, came third with 28,972 votes. Returning Officer and Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, Professor Nnenna Oti, subsequently declared Otti the Governor-elect having polled the highest number of votes and satisfied all necessary conditions.

Truck Driver Jailed 12months for Illegal Mining in Kwara Justice Muhammed Sani of the Federal High Court sitting in Ilorin, Kwara State has convicted and sentenced one Buba Muhammed, a 37-year-old truck-driver, to one-year imprisonment for possession of solid minerals confirmed by the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency, NGSA, to be lepidolite, montmorillonite and chrysocolla, without lawful authority. Lepidolite is one of the raw materials used in the production of batteries for vehicles, cell phones, cameras and other electronic devices. Nigeria currently has 679 peacekeepers in global operations — NDC commandant 22 March 2023  The Commandant National Defence College (NDC), Rear Adm. Murtala Bashir, says Nigeria currently contributes 679 peacekeepers, deployed to various missions to enhance global Peace Support Operations. Bashir said this at the opening of the seminar on “Future of Peace Support Operations”, for participants of Course 31 of the college on Tuesday, in Abuja. “Nigeria currently has 310 peacekeepers which is inclusive of military, police and civilians in UN missions, 200 in ECOWAS missions, 54 in UN/AU Hybrid missions and 115 in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF),” he said. He noted that the internal security challenges had reduced the number of troops contributed by Nigeria to the global peace keeping operations. Chad jails 400 rebels for life after ruler’s death  22 March 2023  More than 400 rebels in Chad were handed life sentences on Tuesday following the death of former ruler Idriss Deby Itno, who was killed in 2021, a public prosecutor told AFP. After a mass trial, they were sentenced for “acts of terrorism, mercenarism, recruitment of child soldiers and assaulting the head of state,” said Mahamat El-Hadj Abba Nana, prosecutor for the capital N’Djamena. He did not give a detailed figure for those jailed, saying only that “more than 400 were sentenced” to life, while 24 other defendants were acquitted. The trial opened last month behind closed doors at Klessoum prison, 20 kilometres (12 miles) southeast of the capital. Ex-permanent secretary, wife found dead in Lagos home 22 March 2023  The family of an ex-permanent secretary in Ogun State, Adefemi Egbeoluwa, and his wife, Oluwafunmilayo, have been grieving after their lifeless bodies were found at their residence around Allen Avenue, in the Ikeja area of Lagos State. It was gathered that the couple were at home with their domestic worker on the day of the governorship and state House of Assembly elections when some yet-to-be-identified persons invaded the premises and killed the couple. After perpetrating the crime, the suspects reportedly attacked the domestic worker, beat her till she lost consciousness, and fled. Soldier shoots okada man, kills nursing mother, baby over N200 22 March 2023  A soldier has reportedly shot a commercial motorcycle rider and his passenger, a nursing mother and her baby, in Babanna community in Borgu LGA of Niger State. It was gathered that the incident happened on Monday evening when the victims were returning home from the Babanna weekly market.
