 Tribunal sacks another Imo PDP Reps member The Imo Sate National and State House of Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal has sacked the lawmaker representing Ehime Mbano/Ihite-Uboma/ Obowo federal constituency, Mr. Okeke Jonas Onwuegbu. The tribunal, in a unanimous decision by a three-member panel of justices, held that Onwuegbu, who was declared winner of the House of Representatives election that held on February 25, was not validly nominated by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. In the lead judgement that was read by Justice Ibrahim Mohammed, the tribunal held that in violation of the provision of section 84 (5) (c)bof the Electoral Act 2022, the PDP, conducted the primary election that produced Onwuegbu as its candidate, in a venue that was outside the constituency. Consequently, it held that the PDP conducted a primary election that was unknown to law. Obi Donates N50m To Anglican Church  Peter Obi has donated N50m to the Awka Anglican Communion, Anambra State, his commitment to the construction of the Department of Midwifery and Public Health Nursing of the Millennium College of Nursing Sciences of the diocese.  The Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections made the donation during the foundation-laying ceremony of the project. NFF approves NPFL name change The Nigerian top-flight has been rechristened the Nigeria Premier Football League. The new name was adopted at the Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, in Uyo on Sunday. The top-flight was previously called the Nigeria Professional Football League. A date for the commencement of the 2023-24 NPFL season is yet to be announced. Enyimba won the 2022-23 NPFL title.

Taraba: Gunmen kill wife in husband’s presence, police on trail Some gunmen killed a housewife and wounded her husband in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, on Sunday. The spokesman of the state Police Command, SP Usman Abdullahi, disclosed the unfortunate incident to Daily Trust in a telephone interview. The incident occurred at the Mile 6 area of Jalingo metropolis of the state. Abdullahi mentioned that the attackers entered the house of one Mr. Balanko Gamalia and shot him and his wife in an attempt to abduct them. The wife was reported to have died on the spot while the injured husband is currently receiving treatment at a hospital in Jalingo. Adamawa govt confirms 8 dead in canoe accident, 7 still missing The Adamawa State on Saturday said eight people had been confirmed dead after a canoe accident in Yola South Local Government Area. A boat carrying 23 passengers had capsized in Njuwa Lake at Rugange, a village in the Yola South LGA, early on Friday, with the government confirming one dead as search operations continued. Eight people had been rescued and eight bodies found, leaving seven other people yet to be accounted for. The Executive Secretary of Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, ADSEMA, Mohamed Suleiman, gave the update when he accompanied the state Deputy Governor, Prof Kaletapwa Farauta, on a sympathy visit to families of the affected people. Fee hike: UNILAG spends N1.7b on electricity annually, says VC Vice Chancellor of University of Lagos(UNILAG), Prof. Folasade Ogunsola has said the institution spends N1.7 billion on electricity per annum. Speaking at a virtual meeting with reporters on Saturday evening, Ogunsola noted that the institution was also struggling with huge debts and under pressure to survive,hence it was imperative to increase fees. The VC said it was necessary to let the public know the state of affairs in the university following the outcry and recent protest that greeted the increment. In July, the university increased tuition fees.Previously students of the institution paid N19,000,but management fixed new fees at N190,250 for students studying medicine, while for courses that require laboratory and studio, they are to pay N140, 250. The 19 year-old American defeated the 25 year-old woman who will become World No. 1 on Monday 2-6 6-3 6-2. Gauff will be the 10th teen to win the U.S. Open women’s singles championship — and the youngest American to claim the title since Serena Williams won in 1999 at the age of 17. With the win, Gauff also became the first American to win a U.S. Open title since Sloane Stephens in 2017. She clinched the U.S. Open trophy in her second Grand Slam final, the first in the French Open. Kalu joins Swiss Club Lausanne Super Eagles winger, Samuel Kalu has joined Swiss club, Lausanne-Sport from Watford on a season-long loan deal. The loan deal also included a purchase option with Kalu wearing jersey number 22 at his new club. The 26-year-old joined Watford from Ligue 1 club, Girondis Bordeaux in January 2022.
