  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. Parents, students cry out as varsities hike fees 30th Jun 2023  Parents and students of some universities across the country have cried out over the hike in school fees, saying the development could worsen their current economic pains and lead to mass students’ withdrawals. Many universities, both federal and state-owned, have issued releases on upward adjustments of registration fees for courses being offered with some of the increment spiking as high as 300%. The development coupled with the harsh economic realities exacerbated by the recent removal of fuel subsidy and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) devaluation of naira, has compounded the woes for ordinary Nigerians in the pursuit of university education, parents and students said. Soldiers reject N5m bribe, nab rail track vandals 30th Jun 2023  Troops of the 4 Special Forces, Doma, Nasarawa State, have arrested 12 suspected rail track vandals at Angwan Yara, Keana Local Government Area (LGA) of Nasarawa State. Maj. Joseph Afolasade, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations of the Command, made the disclosure at a press briefing on Friday in Doma. According to Maj. New academic curriculum ‘imposed’ on varsities not acceptable — ASUU 30th Jun 2023  ACADEMIC Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has accused the National Universities Commission, NUC, of imposing the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standards, CCMAS, on Nigerian universities, vowing not to recognise it. ASUU said the action of the nation’s universities’ regulatory body was contrary to the law guarding operations of universities in the country. The university lecturers’ organisation, in a statement, Friday, by its president, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, particularly described the NUC action as usurpation of the powers of university senate. The outgoing Professor Abubakar Rasheed handed over to Maiyaki Friday at a small event with Former ES of the commission Prof Julius Okojie, members of the directors of the commission and other special guests, including former Vice Chancellors of Universities. Professor Rasheed is returning to Bayero University, Kano, where he is to resume as a lecturer on July 1, 2023. Japa: Atiku’s aide mocks Buhari’s reason for leaving Daura for London Daniel Bwala, a media aide to Atiku Abubakar, has criticised ex-President Muhammadu Buhari over his relocation to London. On Thursday, Buhari said he dumped his hometown of Daura in Katsina State for London due to the nature of visitors trooping to see him. Buhari lamented that he was not accorded the kind of quiet time he wanted in Daura; hence, he left for London. Peter Obi deletes tweet addressing Tinubu as Mr President Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general election, has deleted a tweet addressing Bola Tinubu as Mr President. Obi, who is challenging the declaration of Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, as the winner of the February 25th election, had earlier, in a statement on his official Twitter handle, condemned the 120-car convoy of the president when he returned from France. Obi, in the deleted tweet, wrote: “Allegedly showing Mr President moving with about a 120-car convoy. While I have not had the opportunity of seeing the said video, my advice remains consistent – that sacrifices for a better Nigeria must start from the leaders at all levels of government.” He later deleted the tweet and published a new one that substituted the ‘120-car convoy of ‘Mr President’ with ‘a trending motorcade video’. Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has condemned the disturbing incident where a police team ran a vehicle over a citizen on Thursday June 29, 2023 at Ekpoma, Edo State.  The IGP has, therefore, directed the erring policemen, who have been in detention in Edo State, to report to the Force Headquarters Abuja on Monday for further action.
