 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud. Speaker Abbas condemns killing of Fulani leader, children in Zaria The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas (PhD), has condemned the killings of a Fulani leader, Alhaji Shuaibu Mohammed, and his four children by suspected bandits in Dorayi community in Zaria Local Government of Kaduna State. Court remands seven Yoruba Nation agitators for invading Ibadan radio station Ibadan Magistrate court has remanded seven Yoruba Nation agitators at Abolongo Correction Centre in Oyo State for invading a radio station.     It would be recalled that the suspects invaded Amuludun station of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, (FRCN) Moniya in Akinyele local government area on Sunday, May 28, 2023.  The suspects who are arraigned on a 4 count charge of Conspiracy, treason and two count charge of armed robbery are, Noah Atoyebi, Adeleke Gbenga AbdulGaniyu Mustaoha and Ifagbola Elijah. Others are; Oladapo Ajala and Rasheed Jimoh. The suspects were arraigned on a 4-count at Ibadan Magistrate court on Monday, June 19, 2023, but their plea was not taken.  Magistrate P.O. Adetuyi ordered them to be remanded at Abolongo Correction Centre and adjourned the case to 13th September 2023. Meet new acting Inspector-General of Police, Egbetokun Olukayode President Bola Tinubu on Monday night appointed his former Chief Security Officer, DIG Egbetokun Olukayode as the acting Inspector General of Police. This is coming barely three months after the Police Service Commission approved the appointment of Egbetokun as a Deputy-Inspector General of Police who will be representing the South-West geopolitical zone of the country. Nigerian Customs To Start Charging VAT On Diesel Imports The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has issued a letter to diesel suppliers in Nigeria, informing them that they are now required to pay value-added tax (VAT) on imported diesel. The VAT Modification Order 2021 exempts certain petroleum products from VAT, but diesel falls outside the exempted category and is subject to VAT. Diesel suppliers have expressed concerns over the new directive, stating that it will increase their business costs, affect profit margins, and have a negative impact on customers, inflation, and the overall economy. The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has issued a letter to diesel suppliers in Nigeria, informing them that they are required to pay value-added tax (VAT) on automobile gas oil (AGO) or diesel imported into the country. Ex-Netherlands international, Quincy Promes sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin The 31-year-old forward, who plays for Russian club Spartak Moscow, was arrested in December 2020 regarding the incident which happened in July of that year. The court in the Netherlands found charges of assault against Promes proven, but found there was no attempted murder or manslaughter, according to ESPN. He must pay €7,000 [£5,973] in compensation to the victim.  Promes is also being prosecuted in the Netherlands for alleged involvement in drugs trafficking. He is suspected of being involved with smuggling 1,360 kilograms of cocaine to the Netherlands or Belgium in two shipments in 2020. Promes, formerly of Ajax, denied the charges but the court found there was enough evidence from two eyewitnesses and intercepted phone conversations to hand down a prison term.  GUNMEN KILLED DURING SHOOT-OUT WITH VIGILANTES IN ANAMBRA Men of the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG) have reportedly killed two gunmen in Okija Community in Ihiala Local Government Area of the State.  The victims were said to have been terrorising residents of the state for some time while enforcing the the Monday sit-at-home order on a bid to unleash mayhem.   It was gathered that the gunmen numbering about 15 stormed the camp of the vigilante members, thinking they were asleep and attempted to open fire on them before the men quickly repelled them in a gun battle. TRIBUNAL: PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION RESULTS FAILED TO UPLOAD – INEC OFFICIALS  Three persons who served as ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as Presiding Officers for the February 25 general elections have told the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC) that only the results of the presidential election failed to upload to IREV. The three INEC ad hoc staff were subpoenaed by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Led in evidence by the petitioner’s counsel, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, SAN, and the Presiding Officers testified to the court that they were able to use the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machine to transmit results for the senatorial and House of Representatives elections with ease. Two Internet Fraudsters Jailed in Port Harcourt Justice E. A. Obile of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday, June 15th, 2023, convicted and sentenced one Harrison Patrick Egileoniso (aka. Nandi Dlamini) to three years in the Correctional Service after pleading "guilty" to three counts bordering on obtaining by false pretences preferred against him by the Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. In view of his plea of ‘‘guilty’’, prosecution counsel, M.T. Iko prayed to the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly. Counsel to the defendant, Collins Philip did not oppose the prayer of the prosecution but asked the Court to temper justice with mercy. Justice Obile convicted and sentenced Harrison to one year on count one with an option of fine of One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100, 000.00) and two years on count two with option of fine of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200, 000.00).
