 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud.  EFCC Presents First Witness Against Couple in Alleged N2.7bn Fraud Trial In Lagos The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Friday, February 2, 2024, presented its first prosecution witness, PW1, Chibueze Chukwuma, Team Lead, Regulatory Enquiries Unit, Access Bank, against a couple, Ruth Idowu and Oriyomi Idowu, who are being prosecuted for an alleged N2.7bn fraud before Justice Mojisola Dada of the Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, Lagos. The defendants are facing 20-count charges bordering on obtaining money by false pretence, money laundering, stealing, retention of stolen property and forgery to the tune of N2,757,188,000.00 (Two Billion,  Seven Hundred and Fifty Seven Million, One Hundred and Eighty-eight Thousand Naira Only).  BSU ASUU DECLARES INDEFINITE STRIKE The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Benue State University branch (ASUU-BSU), has declared an indefinite strike. This is to address longstanding issues related to better conditions of service. The move follows the failure of the Benue State University (BSU) Administration to meet the demands of the union despite previous agreements. The union had suspended a similar strike on June 26, 2023, after assurances were given by the state government and the university’s management that the union’s demands would be addressed. In a joint statement issued by the Branch chairman, Comrade Kwaghfan Tarnongo, and Secretary, Terrumun Gajir, the union announced the commencement of a “total, indefinite, and comprehensive strike” after obtaining approval from the National body.  ‘I started my career as DJ’ – Kcee Popular Nigerian singer Kingsley Okonkwo, aka Kcee, has revealed that he started his career as a disc jockey. Speaking in the latest episode of the Afrobeats Podcast, the ‘Limpopo’ crooner said he and his brother and co-founder of Five Star Music, Emeka Okonkwo, aka E-Money, were disc jockeys before switching careers. He said: “My father was a DJ, a record seller. I grew up in a home where my father sold records. So all the old-school artists, I know them [their music]. I was selling their records when I was about 5 or 6 years old. “When I was in secondary school, I was already handling a full record store and playing at parties. I and E-Money were DJs.  Court Jails Fake US Soldier for $5,000 Fraud in Port Harcourt The Port Harcourt Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, @officialEFCC, has secured the conviction and imprisonment of a fake United States soldier,   Chukwuema Samuel Andrew.  He was arraigned on two-count charges bordering on advance fee fraud contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act.  Count one of the charges reads: "That you, Chukwuema Samuel Andrew (a.k.a Mary Parlier) sometime in April, 2021 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State within the jurisdiction of this honourable court with intent to defraud, did obtain the sum of $5,300 (Five Thousand Three Hundred Dollars) under the pretext of being Mary Parlier, a female soldier serving in Yemen as a computer operator, a pretext which to your knowledge was false and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 1(1) (a) of the Advance Fee and Ot

 Naira appreciates significantly amid CBN intervention The Naira closed the week positively, appreciating marginally against the US Dollar at the Foreign Market amid the Central Bank of Nigeria’s sweeping policy interventions. Data from FMDQ showed that the Naira appreciated N1,435.53 per US Dollar on Friday from N1461.90 on Thursday. This represents a 1.8 per cent or 26.37 gain compared to N1461.90 recorded at the close of trading on Friday. This is the second time the Naira has appreciated marginally in the week under review. Similarly, the Naira recorded a gain at the parallel Market, which traded at 1,440 per US dollar on Friday from N1,470 the previous day. In the last four days, CBN, under its Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, has released four policy reforms to wrestle down the free fall of Naira.   Jefferson County, Kentucky deputy dies from an accidental discharge from his firearm. 60-year-old Marion "Scott" Fawbush passed away in his vehicle around 5pm on Wednesday.   According to official reports Fawbush had just gotten of work and was in his vehicle when his gun discharged.  The round struck him in a major artery in his leg and he sadly died on scene. Fawbush has been a deputy for Jefferson County since 2016. This is coming weeks after the rate was increased from N783/$ to N952/$. In November, the exchange rate for cargo clearance was raised from N757 per dollar to N783 per dollar, representing a 3.4 per cent increase, and was later raised from N783/$ to N952/$ in December.  Oyo suspended traditional ruler over links to illegal miners – Commissioner The Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade has revealed the rationale behind the suspension of one of the traditional rulers in the state.  The state governor had earlier announced the suspension of the Onido of Ido, Oba Gbolagade Muritala Babalola. Oyelade in a statement issued on Friday, said that the traditional ruler was suspended over links with illegal miners in the state.
