  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements.        The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC Maiduguri Zonal Office on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 secured the conviction of one Aisata Abba Kwana, a Deputy Director with Maiduguri Municipal Council, MMC.   Kwana who was prosecuted on a-two count charge of obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N3. 278, 216.20 (Three Million Two Hundred and Seventy Eight Thousand Two Hundred and Sixteen Naira Twenty Kobo) was convicted by  Justice Fadawu Umar of the State High Court Maiduguri, Borno State.The convict who was sentenced to one year imprisonment on the two counts charge is however to pay with a fine of (N250, 000.00) Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira as optional. The years are run concurrently.Tje judge further stated that the convict should compensate the complainants the remaining balance of N870, 000.00, in default of which she will serve six months imprisonment on each of the charge, to be run consecutively”.The convict was re-arraigned and she pleaded guilty to

       The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Wednesday, January 24, 2018, arrested one Fidelis Iruedo, a suspected love scammer, for allegedly defrauding a United Kingdom citizen of £30,000 (Thirty Thousand Pounds) in a romance scam.   Luck ran out of Iruedo, 31, after a petition to the Commission by the Nigerian High Commission, London, on behalf of one Alan Digweed, a UK citizen, alleging that the suspect had defrauded his vic tim of the said amount of money.Investigations by the EFCC revealed that Iruedo, who voluntarily confessed to the crime, met his victim between July and December 2017, via a date site,  match.com.  The suspect, while parading as a lady, procured British passport using the name ‘Tracy Anderson’ with which he used to defraud the victim.He was arrested in Abuja, during an attempt to make withdrawal in a bank.On arrest, items recovered from him include: several scam letters, 3 flash drives, 1 iphone and a laptop computer.  The suspect will be arr

       The Lagos State Government on Wednesday arrested a total of 24 persons including cart pushers, street traders and some residents for dumping waste on road medians and canals contrary to the Environmental Sanitation Laws of the State. The suspects, who have been charged before the Special Offences Court sitting in Ogba, Ikeja, were arrested in an early morning operation carried out by men of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC) recently inaugurated by the State Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode. Giving details on the operation, LAGESC Corps Marshal, Daniel Isiofia said the suspects were arrested following investigation which revealed that cart pushers and some residents were indiscriminately dumping domestic refuse at sites not designated for waste disposal and canals, thereby sabotaging the ongoing efforts to make the State clean and hygienic.       Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on Wednesday inaugurated the Governing Council of the Citizens Mediation Centre (CMC), urging members of the Council to work assiduously to enhance the capacity of the Centre to provide free and effective alternative dispute resolution of matters. Governor Ambode, who spoke at the inauguration ceremony, held at the Lagos House in Ikeja, said his administration will continue to ensure the growth and expansion of the CMC in recognition of the important role the Centre plays in mediating on disputes reported in respect of all matters that fall within the ambit of its statutory duties as well as providing free dispute resolution options. “In every city where monetary, human and other capitals flow in such large volume as can be found in our State, an alternative to the adversarial means of resolving disputes must be put in place for easier and faster resolution of matters.          PHOTOS: Today's Weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC) Meeting, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, State House. FEC briefing is about to kick off. Minister of Information Lai Mohammed is presiding and also addressing the press are Ministers of Water Resources, Agriculture, Health, and Minister of State, Power, Works and Housing. Highlights of the briefing: 1.) Ministry of Water Resources- FEC approved a memo for the completion of an abandoned irrigation project benefiting Kano & Jigawa States. This project, abandoned since 2000, is presently at 50% completion and will increase irrigation hectarage in Nigeria by more than 2000 hectares. Expected completion period for this project is 24 months. The irrigation project is one of the 116 large-scale abandoned/uncompleted projects inherited by the Ministry and they are determined to complete all abandoned projects. More photos below.
