 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud. Doctors Peform First-ever Brain Surgery On Baby Inside Womb Medical doctors have performed a first-ever brain surgery on a baby with a deadly genetic disorder while it is still inside the mother's womb. The yet-to-be-born baby was diagnosed with a vein of Galen malformation at 30 weeks and children born with this kind of condition have a 30 per cent chance of dying before age 11, Daily Mail reported on Thursday. The surgery which involved cutting into the womb, the baby's skull and then operating on the developing brain was carried out by a ten-man team of doctors at the Boston Children's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital, United States. The operation requires slicing into the pregnant woman's abdomen and using an ultrasound to identify the artery and guide the surgery. After the operation, the baby's mother gave birth to a healthy baby boy two days later without birth defects.

NIGERIANS TO PAY MORE FOR ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES – FG May 4, 2023 Beer drinkers in Nigeria will be paying more for beer as federal government increases alcoholic drinks tax rate to N75 a litre according to the new fiscal policy, the new rates will take effect from June 1, 2023. The new tax adjustments of the federal government on increase excise duties will affect alcoholic wines, spirits (whisky, brandy, vodka, and rums), beer and stout. Reacting to the development the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) said the new policy will likely encourage illicit trade, and layoffs in the industry. Insisting that what the industry needs from the government at this time is enabling policies and not additional tax burden.

Sudan: We Need More Aircraft To Evacuate Nigerians – FG May 4, 2023      The federal government has said more aircraft need to be made available to evacuate Nigerians affected by Sudan war from Egypt. Chairman, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabir, stated this at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport, Abuja, while awaiting the arrival of 376 stranded Nigerians from Egypt. She said if four airplanes can move at once, everyone would definitely arrive. According to her, Egypt officials insist that the airplanes sent from Nigeria must be able to accommodate the number of Nigerians available to travel, else they would not let them evacuate anyone. “If four planes go at the same time, they will bring everybody back.   A yet to be identified mother has abandoned her newborn baby with a handwritten note in Cameroon.    The baby was found in the early hours of Thursday, May 4, 2023, beside MIDENO in Ntefinki quarter in Nkwen, Bamenda, North West region of Cameroon.   “The baby was discovered around 6:00am. After notifying the quarter head and other authorities, the child was taken to the Health Centre where he was confirmed to be doing well in health,” a source told journalists.   The child has reportedly been taken to the police station for further procedures on his welfare.   In the note left beside the baby, the mother said she took the painful decision because she has nobody to help her.   “I am sorry I had to do this. I had no other choice because I want my child to live a happy life. I have nothing, no one to help me and nothing to start a small business that can sustain the baby and I,” the note reads.    “Please help me take good care of him and I pray God bless and grant your heart desires.

Arabic and Islamic Board Staff Arraigned for Employment Scam  in Kaduna The Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arraigned one Mustapha Balarabe Dalhatu before Justice A.A Bello of the Kaduna State High Court, Kaduna on seven count charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence and employment scam. The defendant, a staff of National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies allegedly collected a sum of N1,000,000 from one Shehu Abdullahi and Eight others, as part payment to secure employment for them in the Institution. But he neither got them the jobs nor refund their money. Investigation revealed that the defendant  had been on suspension for serial job scam and misconduct.  The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him. Consequently, the prosecution counsel, M.Arumemi urged the court to fix a date for trial to commence. But the  defence counsel, I.O Ezenwa moved for the bail of the defendant. ABU Accountant, One Other Arraigned for N114 Million Fraud An Accountant with  the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Balarabe Hassan was on Wednesday, May 3, 2023 arraigned alongside Suraj Oyewepo, a senior Cash Office Staff, before Justice Darius Khobo of the Kaduna State High Court, Kaduna on a nine count charge bordering on theft to the tune of over One Hundred and Fourteen Million Naira by the Kaduna Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Among the allegations against Balarabe was that he fraudulently enrolled a company, RAYYAN GENERAL MERCHANT owned by Oyewepo into the GIFMIS platform on the basis of which the company received various payments without any legitimate reason. Israni,  Anayo Nwosu and Olajide Oshodi, who are both officials of Keystone Bank, had been convicted by Justice Kudirat Jose of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Igbosere, Lagos on December 9, 2019 on an amended 15-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining by false pretence to the tune of N855 million. NAF Evacuates 94 Nigerians From Sudan Nigerian Airforce-NAF has evacuated 94 Nigerians stranded in Sudan. In a statement by Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ayodele Famuyiwa says the evacuees arrived the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja at about 11:54pm last night. The statement explains that the evacuees are among the first batch of 276 Nigerians airlifted from Aswan in the wake of the ongoing security challenges in Sudan. It maintains that the effort is in furtherance of its constitutional role of aid to Civil Authority, and in line with Federal Government's commitment to rescue and successfully return back Home Nigerians living in Sudan. Drone Strike: We didn't attack Putin — Zelensky 4 May 2023  President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday denied Moscow’s claim that Ukraine had attempted to assassinate Russian leader Vladimir Putin after Russia said two drones were shot down over the Kremlin.  “We didn’t attack Putin… We fight on our territory, we are defending our villages and cities,” Zelensky told reporters at a press conference with Nordic leaders in Helsinki. “We don’t attack Putin or Moscow. We don’t have enough weapons for this,” he added. Russia said Wednesday it had shot down two drones targeting Putin’s Kremlin residence in what it called a Ukrainian “terrorist” assassination attempt. “The devices were put out of action,” a Kremlin statement said. Senate Approves Buhari’s N22.7trn Loan Request  May 4, 2023 The Senate, on Wednesday, approved the N22.719,703,774,306.90 trillion ‘Ways and Means’ advances taken from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) by the Federal Government. It was sent to the Senate last year by President Muhammadu Buhari. Ways and Means are loans or advances given by the CBN to the Federal Government to enable it cater for short term or emergency finance to fund delayed government expected cash receipt of deficit. Adopting the report of its special committee on Ways and Means which considered the president’s request, the Senate said: “The restructuring sum of N22, 719,703,774,306.90 trillion for Ways and Means Advances was approved because the advances were made to ensure that the government does not shutdown.” The upper legislative chamber also approved the sum of N180,463,062,187 billion being the balance of the supplementary budget and interest accrued on the Ways and Means Advances.
