  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements.  EFCC Arrests 17 Suspected Internet Fraudsters in Abuja   Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on March 1, 2024, arrested seventeen suspected internet fraudsters.   They were arrested in the Gwagwalada axis of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja in a sting operation, following credible intelligence on their alleged involvement in internet fraud.    Items recovered from them  are four cars, 22 phones and two laptops.   They will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

  Citing Non-observance of Guidelines, CBN Revokes Licenses of 4,173 BDCs (PRESS RELEASE) The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in exercise of the powers conferred on it under the Bank and Other Financial Institutions Act (BOFIA) 2020, Act No. 5, and the Revised Operational Guidelines for Bureaux De Change 2015 (the Guidelines), has revoked the licenses of 4,173 Bureaux De Change Operators. The list of affected BDC operators is available on the Bank’s website (www.cbn.gov.ng). The affected institutions failed to observe at least one of the following regulatory provisions:   Payment of all necessary fees, including licence renewal, within the stipulated period in line with the Guidelines.   Rendition of returns in line with the Guidelines.   Compliance with guidelines, directives and circulars of the CBN, particularly Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Countering the Financing of Terrorism (CFT) and Counter-Proliferation Financing (CPF) regulations.  Protest erupts in Jos prison over hardship, reduction in food ration Prison inmates at the Correctional Centre in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Friday protested increased hardship in the cramped facility. The inmates also expressed displeasure over the plan by prison officials to reduce their food ration. It was gathered that the protest erupted after the inmates got a wind of the plan to reduce their daily food ration which most of them considered inadequate. During the protest, the inmates refused to take orders from the custodial officials  and also shunned breakfast.

 Telecoms subscribers to NCC: Extend deadline for barring unlinked lines by 30 days The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has asked the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to extend the deadline for blocking unlinked subscribers to March 31, 2024. The NCC had directed all telecommunication operators to bar phone lines of unlinked subscribers from February 2024. The directive, effective February 28, 2024, is expected to affect over 42 million inactive phone numbers, and 3 million active lines. Unlinked lines are subscriber identity module (SIM) cards not yet linked with the national identification number (NIN).   Yoruba actor Sisi Quadri dies at 44 A Nollywood actor, Tolani Quadri Oyebamiji. popularly known as Sisi Quadri is reportedly dead. Oyebamiji’s death was announced by some of his colleagues in the Yoruba movie industry.   SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff. Imo undergraduate stabs FUTO student to death Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested a 21-year-old  student of the Imo State University, Francis Marvelous, for allegedly stabbing to death, a final-year student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Marvelous Kingsley. A statement issued in Owerri, the state capital on Friday by the command’s spokesperson, Henry Okoye, disclosed that the FUTO student was killed on Thursday night following an altercation with the suspect. Okoye said the IMSU undergraduate was arrested by the operatives of the command following a distress call. He revealed that the suspect would be arraigned at the conclusion of the investigation by the command. Okoye dispelled the speculation making the rounds that the FUTO undergraduate was stabbed to death by a Fulani herdsman.  Police Stray Bullet Kills Man Sending Money Via PoS To Wife There was tension in Igueomo community on the Benin-Agbor Road after a stray bullet allegedly fired from a police gun killed a man in the area. It was gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday evening when the deceased, said to be a Hausa man went to a POS operator to transfer N4000 to his wife in his village. City & Crime learnt that some hoodlums had issues with the police and the operatives stormed the area to arrest them and in the process of chasing the boys, they fired gun shots at the fleeing boys but the bullet hit the victim who was running for safety and he died on the spot. A source told our correspondent that the deceased, after transferring N4000 to the wife,  heard of the commotion in the area and decided to run to a safer place, only to be hit by the stray bullet.  Constitution amendment: First draft ready in August 2025 – Kalu Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has said that the first draft report of the ongoing review of the 1999 constitution would be ready in August 202.   He equally said the final clean copy for the presidential assent after the voting on the expected issues of concern by the two chambers of the National Assembly would be out in August, 2025. Kalu dropped the hints at a press conference by the House Committee on Constitution Review on Thursday. It could be recalled that the committee on its inauguration, Monday, in Abuja, gave a 24-month timeline for the conclusion of the exercise.
