 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud. They were arrested on Friday, April 26, 2024 in a sting operation following credible intelligence about illegal sales of dollars at the Wuse Zone 4 area of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.   The suspects are :Usman Mohammed, Abdullahi Nasir, Abubakar Saleh, Mohammed Kabir Ibrahim, Abubakar Ghadafi, Muktar Usman, Umar Abubakar Abba, Yakubu Sani, Aminu Abubakar, Muhammed Suleman Abara, Yusuf Tahir, Usman Lawal, Usman Lawal, Usman Umar, Amina Garba Rola, Muhammed Aliyu, Murtala Haruna, Sani Mohammed, Umar Farouk, Muhammed Sagiuru, Aminu Salisu, Lawal Bello, Munzali Hashim, Jamilu Suleiman, Mustapha Umar, Mubarak Tanimu, Adamu Garba, Mohammed Usman, Bello Musa, Saleh Moha

                 According to sources,for the past one week,there has been tension and violence at Odo-Aladura section of Ladipo motor spare pars market following a failed attempt to demolish over 2,000 shops in the market in Mushin,Lagos State.Francas broke out at the market after hundreds of thugs invaded the market with arms and two caterpillars and attacked the traders and attempted to demolish shops there.The traders who were caught unaware fought back the thugs and chased them away after many were injured on both sides.The thugs were allegedly led by a man well known to the traders.During the fracas many traders including the thugs sustained injuries and are in several hospitals in Lagos receiving treatment.One of the injured traders is Anene Otasi who is still lying in critical condition at the University of Lagos Teaching Hospital {Luth},Idi Araba,where doctors are battling to remove pellets from his body following the gun shot wounds he sustained.Since the incident happened,th

                  As part of efforts geared towards reducing disaster risks in Lagos State,the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency {LASEMA} has adopted monitoring and surveillance of domestic,industrial aand public facilities into its main activity of disaster management.Speaking with newsmen on the activities of the Surveillance and monitoring Unit of the Agency,LASEMA General Manager,Mr. Michael Akindele,explained that the shift from search and rescue to disaster risk reduction,through emergency prevention,mitigation,early warning and advocacy are new strategies in disaster management.He explained that the new approach is a practical one to reducing emergencies/disasters thereby reducing the huge expenses borne by the State Government on relief assistance to victims of disasters.Akindele stated that the Agency is taking proactive steps to carry out immediate monitoring/inspection of reported distressed and thereafter work in partnership with other government Agencies to prevent d

                The U.S Centres for Disease Control and Prevention {CDC} said it was investigating  1 4 new reports of possible sexual transmission of the zika virus in the country.The CDC said in a statement today wednesday in Washington that several of the cases involved pregnant women.It said it has earlier this month published an interim recommendation for protecting people against sexual transmission of the zika virus.The CDC said that in two of the new suspected sexual transmission events,zika virus infection was confirmed in women whose only known risk factor was sexual contact with an ill male partner.The report noted that male partners had recently travelled to an area with local zika virus transmission.The CDC said furher that four additional suspected sexual transmission events,preliminary laboratory evidence was available for the women,but confirmatory tests are pending.''Eight other cases are still under investigation.In all events for which information is availabl

MTN PAYS $250 MILLION FOR THE FINE AND WITHDREW THE LAWSUIT AGAINST NIGERIA COMMUNICATION COMMISSION.

                                     MTN Group,a South African Telecommunication company based in Nigeria,have decided to withdraw its lawsuit against Nigeria Communications Commission {NCC} over a $3.9 billion fine and paid $250 million towards a possible settlement.MTN,which makes 37 % of its sales in Nigeria,said it would withdraw its court challenge in an effort to reach an amicable settlement and make a ''good faith payment of $250 million towards a possible settlement.Dobek Pater,managing director of Africa Analysis said ''This is a sign that the fine could be reduced much further.There is some sort of negotiation taking place and the parties are migrating towards a common ground''.The original peenalty was based on fining the company $ 1 , 000 for every unregistered SIM card in use.A judge in Lagos last month gave both parties March  1 8 to reach a settlement,after MTN had asked the court to arbitrate over the dispute,saying the Nigerian Communications Co
