 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud. Operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Intelligent Response Team have arrested three suspected members of a notorious kidnap gang that allegedly killed a businessman and philanthropist, Jacob Ugwa, in Aba, Abia State. Late Jacob, an indigene of Abiriba in Ohafia local government area of the state, was shot dead by the kidnappers inside his compound at the Ogbor Hill area of Aba on July 30th, during a failed kidnap attempt. The suspects included an ex-official of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Chinedu Agwu, aka, General, who was released from prison in February 2021 after serving five years for a criminal offence. Others are a welder, Nnadozie Monday; and the gang’s tricycle rider, Godwin Uche. NCC: TELECOMMUNICATION COMPANIES TO PAY N200K FINE PER LINE OVER FAILURE TO VERIFY NIN.{PHOTO}.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has proposed a fine of N200,000 for telecommunications companies that fail to verify and validate biometric, National Identity Number (NIN) and other personal information of subscribers. This is contained in a proposed draft regulation on registration of telephone subscribers 2021 published on NCC’s website. The federal government had asked Nigerians to enrol for NIN and link their unique number to the phone lines. Since the announcement in 2020, an extension of the deadline for NIN registration and subscriber identity module (SIM) integration exercise has taken place at least six times. January 19, 2021 was the initial deadline, but it was moved to February 9, April 6, May 6, June 30, July 26 and now October 31. Section 19 of the draft document, NCC said mobile communications services providers must ensure that NINs are verified and validated before activation. It said a penalty of N200,000 awaits those who breach the requirement.

Four people have lost their lives in the twin attacks that occurred on Sunday night by gunmen at Faskari and Dandume Local Government Areas of Katsina state. The gunmen killed two people and injured scores of residents at Mahuta community in Dandume council. At Faksari in the Tafoki community, a shootout between the gunmen and vigilante personnel led to the death of two bandits, with several others sustaining injuries on both sides. The Tafoki incident, according to sources, occurred when bandits stormed the community with aim of abducting the father to the Deputy Speaker, state House of Assembly, Shehu Dalhatu Tafoki. “The lawmaker’s father, Dalhatu Tafoki, is the head of the community, and the bandits stormed the area with the aim of abducting him,” a source said.
