  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. Suspected Ballot Snatcher Shot Dead In Kebbi State April 15, 2023      A suspected ballot box snatcher has been shot dead by soldiers on patrol at Bajida polling unit 001, Fakai Local Government Area of Kebbi South. The yet-to-be-identified man was reportedly shot dead while he was attempting to snatch a ballot box from officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the ongoing supplementary elections in the state. According to eyewitnesses in the area, the deceased was a member of the proscribed Yansakai, a local volunteer vigilante group. He was said to have intruded into the polling unit claiming to be a security agent. Most Southeasterners Have Lost Faith In Governance – Okonjo-iweala April 15, 2023      The Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said many Nigerians, especially those from the South-East, have lost hope in governance. She charged the Abia State governor-elect, Dr Alex Otti, to run a clean and transparent government. Okonjo-Iweala said the incoming government should focus on “disruptive strategies rather than traditional operational systems”. She gave the charge in a speech she presented virtually at the inauguration of the 100-member 2023 Abia Transition Council held in Aba, Abia’s economic hub. Voting Disrupted In Rivers Polling Unit, INEC Officials ‘Flee’ With Result Sheet, BVAS, Others 15 April 2023 Saturday’s supplementary polls were disrupted at Ward 4, Polling Unit 5 of Sogho in the Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State. It was gathered that the disruption followed a disagreement between the party agents of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). According to reports obtained by newsmen, the voting process was going on smoothly until the disagreement occurred. However, in the heat of the disagreement, the ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) abruptly left the scene and took with them the result sheets, BVAS machines, ballot boxes, and ballot papers. In their haste, they, however, left the voting cubicle behind. One of the voters who was quoted in a report by Channels Television alleged that the votes were neither counted nor the result sheets signed before the INEC officials left.

Sowore Raises Alarm Over Tinubu’s Health April 15, 2023      The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Omoyole Sowore, on Saturday, raised an alarm over the whereabouts and health status of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu. Sowore said Tinubu was not seen in Mecca performing the hajj which was contrary to claims by his aides. He also wondered why Tinubu’s location and health status have been kept hidden from the public. Tweeting, Sowore wrote: “Tinubu @officialABAT wasn’t seen anywhere in Mecca (some of his handlers claimed he briefly traveled there). “But he was never with @mbuhari and his tightly control apparitions in France are largely controlled but unverifiable sightings. “What’s Tinubu’s real health condition? MAN WHO ALLEGEDLY RAPED 2 YEAR OLD BABY HAS BEEN REMANDED IN PRISON CUSTODY BY COURT  Children, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka has remanded one Joseph Egwuatu, a 35 year old man who allegedly raped a 2 year old baby in Anambra West Local Government Area. Joseph who hails from Nzam in Anambra West LGA was arraigned before the Children, Sexual and Gender Based Violence Magistrate court in Awka on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 on a two count charge bothering on rape.  Though the charge was read to him but he didn't not take a plea. 18 Lawyers To Prosecute Electoral Offenders - EFCC, INEC The Independent National Electoral Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have appointed 18 lawyers including two Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to prosecute electoral offenders. The 18 lawyers – all legal officers of both INEC and the EFCC – will prosecute electoral offences relating to financial crimes arising from the 2023 general elections.

Nigerian dies after falling from hotel window in Turkey 15 April 2023  Nigerian-born Italian up-and-coming volleyball star, Julia Ituma, has died after a suspected fall from a hotel room window in Turkey,  following her team, Novara’s, defeat to Turkish side Eczacibas in the Champions League semi-final. Turkish police said 18-year-old Ituma was staying on the sixth floor of a hotel in Istanbul. The body of the Italian-born athlete of Nigerian origin was discovered at 5:30 am local time in front of the hotel, Turkish daily Daily Sabah reported. Tunisian footballer dies after setting self ablaze 15 April 2023   Tunisian football player Nizar Issaoui, 35, has died from burns suffered after setting himself alight earlier this week as a protest against "police injustice", his family said on Friday. Clashes erupted between police and angry protesters in Haffouz, the hometown of Issaoui. Police fired gas to disperse the protesters who had gathered in front of the police headquarters, witnesses told Reuters. Issaoui, a former player for top-flight side US Monastir and a father of four published a video on Facebook in which he said the reason for his protest was being falsely accused of terrorism in Haffouz, Kairouan, central Tunisia. The striker, who was a free agent and playing in the amateur leagues before his death, suffered third-degree burns and doctors weren't able to save his life, his brother Ryad told reporters. The Lord did it but unfortunately took them both this morning( 13/04/2023) She complained of Shortness of breath, and she died before she was rushed to the hospital.   She was planning of having her 50th Birthday with the naming later this year. 💔💔 Please pray for us because this  pain is unbearable. Almajiri found dead in Jigawa, with gorged eye 15 April 2023  Police in Jigawa recovered the corpse of a 16-year old “Almajiri” in Kiyawa Local Government Area of the state on Friday. Assailants had gorged one of his eyes before the police arrived. Police spokesman in the state, DSP Lawan Shiisu, stated on Friday that the Islamic knowledge teacher of the deceased, Malam Muhammad Mustafa, reported the matter to the police. “The complainant reported that one of his students, aged 16, went to a nearby bush to fetch firewood at about 8 a.m. on Friday, but did not return home. “The student was later found in a pool of his own blood with one of his eyes removed,” he stated. Shiisu added that the boy was taken to Dutse General Hospital where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor. He stated also that a manhunt had started for the assailants.
