The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. Ex-Anambra governor, Ezeife dies at 85   Former Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife is dead. The elder statesman, according to an e-signed statement by Chief Rob Nwakaire Ezeife (Ahaejiejemba Igbo-Ukwu), on behalf of the Ezeife Dynasty of Igbo-Ukwu, Anambra State, said he died at about 6pm at the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, on Thursday. He was born on November 20, 1938. A former federal permanent secretary, Ezeife was elected executive governor of Anambra State on the platform of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the aborted third republic and he served from January 1992 to November 1993. Supreme Court Decides Kanu’s Fate Today Supreme Court will on Friday, December 15th deliver its judgement on the appeal seeking to compel the federal government to release the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, from detention. The apex court in October fixed the date after counsel for both the federal government and the detained IPOB leader adopted their final briefs of argument. Chief Mike Ozehkome (SAN), who argued the appeal, prayed the court to not only order the immediate release of his client from detention but to equally award very heavy and punitive costs against the federal government. In his submission, however, counsel to the federal government, Tijani Gazzali urged the apex court to uphold the amended brief of argument he filed on May 3, 2023.  Police recover vehicles, motorcycles used for Ekiti bank robbery Police in Ekiti have recovered three vehicles and two motorcycles used by the armed robbers that attacked banks and killed three people in Ikere-Ekiti on Wednesday. State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Sunday Abutu, said in a statement on Thursday in Ado-Ekiti that the command was on the trail of the fleeing suspects, who abandoned the vehicles after a hot chase by police operatives. The statement noted that the state Commissioner of Police, Ogundare Dare, had visited the scene of the armed robbery for an on-the-spot assessment. The commissioner, who expressed displeasure over the incident, directed the Ikere Area Commander and all the Tactical Teams within the command to ensure the perpetrators were arrested and brought to book. Kano Govt to pay demolished shop owners N3bn Kano State Government on Thursday agreed to pay N3bn as compensation to the Incorporated Trustees of Masallacin Eid Shop Owners and Traders Association for the unlawful demolition of their property. The agreement was reached through an application on terms of settlement dated December 12 and filed December 13 by counsel for the parties before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja. The News Agency of Nigeria reported that following the demolition of the shops on Governor Abba Yusuf’s order, 56 applicants, on behalf of the association, filed the suit marked FHC/KN/CS/208/2023 in Kano division. subsidy Is Gone’, FG Dismisses World Bank’s Claim The Federal Government has said contrary to the claim by the World Bank that government is still paying subsidy on petrol, the era of petrol subsidy is “gone for good”. Speaking in an interview on Channels TV on Thursday morning, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said President Bola Tinubu made it clear from his first day in office that his government would not sustain the payment of subsidy on petrol. The minister said the subsidy removal had translated to increased revenue accruing to the federation account. The World Bank hinted on Wednesday that current fuel prices in Nigeria were not cost-reflective and that the Federal Government might still be paying subsidy on petrol. The bank said Nigerians should be paying about N750 per litre as against the current price of N650 in some parts of the country. The hammer price broke the record for a sale of an item linked to the Argentine star, and is the most valuable item of sporting memorabilia sold at auction this year so far, Sotheby’s said. Akwa Ibom Chief Judge, Obot frees 10 inmates Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaette Obot, on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, pardoned 10 inmates awaiting trials at Correctional Centres in the State. Justice Obot during a facility tour of the Centres freed six inmates from Eket and four from Ikot Abasi custodial centres, having found that they had already spent years in custody for alleged minor offences without being charged to court. The Chief Judge while freeing the inmates unconditionally charged them to be of good behaviour and avoid anything that would bring them back to the correctional service. She also expressed disaffection with the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP) and the Police for keeping inmates for up to two to three years without charging them to court.  EFCC Arrests Twins, Five others for Suspected Internet Fraud in Ibadan The Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested twin brothers, Adio Taiwo Hassan and Adio kehinde Hussein alongside five others for alleged internet fraudulent activities. They were arrested on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at Apete and Apata areas of Ibadan, Oyo State,  following surveillance and actionable intelligence on their suspected involvement in internet- related offences.  The five other suspects are: Jeremiah Gabi, Dennis Gomina, Adepoju Noah Ibukun, Olabode Samson Opeyemi and Adewumi Adeboye Ayomide. In the same vein, the Oyo State Police Command handed over three suspected internet fraudsters to the Ibadan Zonal Command of the EFCC on December 7, 2023.
