 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud.  One Arrested Over Murder Of Enugu Lawmaker July 17, 2023 One of the suspects involved in the murder of Duhu Nelson Sylvester Nnacheta, the Councilor representing Eha-Ulo Ehalumona Council Ward in Nsukka Local Government Area Legislative Council, has been arrested. Nnacheta was killed  by gunmen on Sunday night at his residence in Eha-Alumonah. Controversy as two poly students, applicant die under mysterious circumstances 18th Jul 2023  Controversy has surrounded the death of two students of Gateway Polytechnic, Ode-Remo, Ogun State, and one other applicant student of the school. The three, according to findings, died under mysterious circumstances. Their bodies were discovered last Wednesday, July 12, though the course of death is yet to be unraveled. Findings revealed that four students of the school and the applicant who is awaiting admission developed stomach problems after allegedly eating a spaghetti meal. Two of the students and the applicant eventually died. According to an Instagram video posted on the school’s blog, the three confirmed dead have been identified as, Bakari Habbeb, an ND2 student of the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Odu Selen, an ND1 student of the Department of Mass Communication, and Hameed, an Applicant of the School for 23/24 academic session. TV Presenter gang-raped, abandoned in classroom 18th Jul 2023   A gang of six men are reported to have raped an 18-year-old private Television Station presenter in Lapai town of Niger state. The incident took place on Saturday. It was learnt that the presenter was on her way home from office when she received a phone call from someone she apparently was familiar with. According to a reliable source, the caller asked her to come to the Kobo Primary School, near the Emir’s Palace in the town, a call she responded to. It was learnt that on entering one of the classrooms where the caller was waiting, she became dizzy after which she was given “something to drink” which made her to sleep off. Before then, according to the findings, her phone was collected, the SIM card was removed and all information in the phone were deleted. Fubara raises alarm over possible emergence of militiamen in Rivers 18th Jul 2023  The Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has raised the alarm over the possible emergence of militiamen in Degema Local Government Area (LGA). Fubara spoke on Tuesday when senior officers led by the new General Officer Commanding, Six Division of the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, visited him at the Government House in Port Harcourt. According to him, the looming threat is due to some men occupying what seems to be an abandoned military base in the locality. The governor described the public appearance of the men with firearms as embarrassing and an insult to the state and federal governments. He challenged the GOC to investigate and tackle the security threat without any delay. Fubara further tasked the Army to strengthen their operations in the outskirts of the state, especially in areas where they have operational bases and where the government is carrying out infrastructural projects

1.6m Nigerians live in modern slavery – NAPTIP 18th Jul 2023  The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has revealed that 1.6million Nigerians live in modern slavery. The agency also said a recent report indicates that 50 million people globally live in modern slavery. To tackle the trend, the Director General of NAPTIP, Prof. Fatima Wazir-Azi said there is an urgent need to protect the rights of victims, control trafficking and build a safer and inclusive society. She disclosed this in Abuja on Tuesday at a press conference to commemorate the 20 anniversary of NAPTIP. CBN releases list of licenced BDC operators 18th Jul 2023  The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on Tuesday released the list of the Bureau De Change (BDC) operators approved by the apex bank. According to the fresh list published by the CBN, the total number of approved BDC dealers has been reduced to 2,991. The document titled ‘Approved BDCs’, revealed that the licenses of 2,698 BDCs have been withdrawn. In 2022, the Central Bank published a similar list in a document with reference: REF: FPR/DIR/PUB/CIR/001/037, titled, ‘List of CBN Licensed Bureaux De Change As at December 31, 2021’ where the CBN had approved 5,689 black market dealers. It Is no longer news that in Nigeria, BDCs are the major influencers of exchange rates. Prior to the emergence of President Bola Tinubu, the operators had grown from 74 in 2005 to 5,689 in 2021. Unknown güñmen attäck Enugu police station, cart away arms A Divisional Police station in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area of Enugu State came under attack by unknown gunmen, early Tuesday morning. Although no officer was reported killed during the attack, one of them was said to have been shot and is currently receiving treatment. The gunmen also succeeded in carting away arms and ammunition. A local hinted that the assailants stormed the unfenced police station at about 2 am with a Toyota Sienna bus, shouting “Release Nnamdi Kanu,” “No Nnamdi Kanu, no peace.” “They came through Eha-Amufu and left through the same axis but it’s not possible they got to Eha-Amufu township or crossed to Nkalagu, otherwise they would have been encountered by the soldiers in that area. It’s possible they went through Aguamede to Benue state,” the source said. The Enugu State Police Public command is yet to issue a statement on the reported attack.

Nigerian Man 'Goes Blind' During Bizarre Attempt To Break Guinness World Record By Crying For 7 Days Nigerian man identified as Tembu Ebere has confirmed that he partially went blind while attempting to cry for seven days to set a record in the Guinness World Records. This is as the craze to achieve feats of endurance sweeps across the country after a chef, Hilda Baci, in May officially broke the record for the longest cooking marathon (individual), with a time of 93 hours 11 minutes.  Ebere, who confirmed his health issues to BBC said that he forced himself to cry for seven days for the record but along the line, he went temporarily blind. Ebere, who has been attempting to cry non-stop for seven days said that he experienced headaches, puffy eyes and a swollen face and went partially blind for 45 minutes amid his efforts. We Can’t Fold Hands, Watch Country Deteriorate, CJN Tells Judiciary  Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, yesterday, urged jurists and legal professionals not to sit by and watch the country degenerate but rather wake up to their role of charting a course for national development. Those arrested are Timothy Odion, Destiny Otokhune, Bright Akhabue, Isaac Eghosa, Philip Anderson, Kennedy Osagie, Kabiru Mohammed, Erharuyi Osaigbovo, Amalawa Kingsĺey, Obasohen Kelvin, Emmanuel Imuentinyan, Eghosa Osadebamwen, Akhere Destiny, Evans Jesse, Kazeem Samson, Luma Kayode, Festus Iyenfunmwena, Osagie Emmanuel, Chinoso Okoye, Michael Okoh, Yadina Chukwudi, Kelvin Amenze, Aikorogie Osarenmweda and Samuyi Ajayi.
