Dr. Barikor is an academic and politician. He was a member of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2015, while Prince Amgbare is a retired naval officer and former commissioner in Bayelsa State.  Appeal Court upholds Gov Fintiri’s election, fines Binani N1m Court of Appeal, on Monday, in Abuja, upheld the election of Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party as the validly elected Governor of Adamawa State. The court, however, dismissed the appeal filed by Aishatu Binani of the All Progressives Congress for lacking merit. The appellate court, in the judgment delivered by Justice Ebiowei Tobi, awarded N500,000 in favour of Fintiri and the PDP, while describing her appeal as lacking merit. The court upheld the decision of the tribunal, which on October 28 dismissed Aishatu Binani’s petition and upheld the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission that Fintiri won the election. Returning Officer for the governorship election, Prof Muhammed Mele, had said Fintiri won the supplementary election with 9,337 votes to 6,513 votes. 3,963 teachers fail professional exams – TRCN No fewer than 3,963 teachers who sat for the Nov. 2023 diet of the Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) failed the examinations. Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, the Registrar of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), the body that conducted the examination, disclosed this at an interactive session with newsmen in Abuja on Monday. Ajiboye said the examination was conducted to test the professional knowledge of teachers in the educational sector. “A total of 15,753 sat the examination at 38 centres across the country. “Out of this, we have 10,636 that passed which is about 72.9 per cent and those that failed are 3,963,’’ he said. Ajiboye also said that other candidates were absent at the examination while others had their results cancelled due to examination malpractices. He assured that the Council would continue to work towards the improvement of the teaching profession in Nigeria.

 Court stops INEC from conducting bye election to replace 27 Rivers lawmakers A Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from conducting bye-election to replace 27 Rivers Assembly members who defected to APC. On December 11, the Nation had reported that 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who are said to be loyal to the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, have reportedly defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Donatus Okorowo, the presiding judge, gave the order on Friday, but was made available to the Nation on Monday. The court also stopped the four member House of Assembly led by Speaker Edison from declaring vacant the seat of the 27 APC Rivers Assembly Members.

Bye elections, rerun elections may hold Feb 1 – INEC The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said it is considering conducting bye-elections and rerun elections across the country on Thursday, February 1, 2024, to fill existing vacancies in the state and federal legislature. The commission’s chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu disclosed this at a meeting with leaders of political parties to prepare for the elections. Prof. Yakubu said at the end of litigation, the courts have ordered the commission to conduct rerun elections in 34 federal and state constituencies made up of one in the Senate, 11 federal constituencies, and 22 state constituencies. In addition, he said the commission will conduct bye-elections to fill vacancies created as a result of resignation or death of members. He said that an authentic date for the election and a comprehensive timetable will be released at the end of the meeting with party leaders.

IDF claims it has discovered ‘biggest Hamas tunnel’ in Gaza The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday said it has uncovered “the biggest Hamas tunnel” in Gaza, spanning a length of four kilometres (2.5 miles). The IDF said the tunnel, secured “a few weeks ago” but revealed to the public Sunday, is wide enough to drive a large vehicle through, reaches up to 50 meters underground and is equipped with electricity, ventilation and communication systems. It does not cross into Israel but ends 400 meters before the now-shut Erez Crossing on the northern Israeli-Gazan border, according to the IDF. Erez was stormed during the October 7 attacks. The tunnel was a part of Hamas’ “strategic infrastructure” and would be destroyed, according to the IDF. In a video shared by the IDF, the Israeli military claimed that the tunnel was created for Hamas troop movements and as a launching point for attacks.
