  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements. Six People have been arrested in connection with illegal tax collection by a joint enforcement team of Kaduna State Internal Revenue Service and the Nigeria Police. A statement signed by the Head Corporate Communication of the Kaduna State Revenue Service Mallam Zakari Jamilu Muhammad says the arrests took place within Rafin Guza, Kawo and Ungwar Dosa axis of Kaduna North Local Government Area. It says the arrested individuals were caught in the process of collecting illicit revenues from unsuspected shop owners which contravenes section Fifty One of the Kaduna state tax consolidation law.  NAF Debunks Viral Video Of Helicopter Wreckage  Nigerian Airforce has debunked a video circulating on social media platforms allegedly depicting the wreckage of the crashed MI-171 helicopter with bodies of victims at Chukuba village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State. FG Arraigns Emefiele, Allies Over N6.9bn Fraud  The Federal Government will on Thursday arraign suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, and his associates for N6.9 billion procurement fraud at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Abuja. Emefiele will be arraigned alongside a female CBN employee, Sa’adatu Yaro and her company, April1616 Investment Limited on 20 charges of procurement fraud, conspiracy and conferring corrupt advantages on his associates. The embattled apex bank chief, who has been in detention since he was suspended from office on June 9, 2023, was accused of conferring corrupt advantages on Yaro, a director in April 1616 Investment Ltd. The offence is contrary to Section 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

This came after parties in the matter adopted their final addresses. The chairman of the panel, Justice Kudirat Morayo Akano, said the date would be duly communicated to the parties. Edeoga is challenging the declaration of Mbah by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the winner of the governorship election in the state. Adopting his final address, Edeoga’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, asked the Tribunal to hold the position of his clients and grant the reliefs sought by his client. The 1988 set of Ransome Kuti Memorial Grammar School, Surulere, Lagos chose to mark the 30th anniversary and reunion of their set in a nostalgic way. They recreated being in secondary school after 30 years.  They wore their school uniforms to school. They gathered in the school for the morning assembly. Late comers knelt down as it was when they were in school. The morning assembly was conducted and announcements made. They sang their old school songs and marched into class in single files.  Current students were present to witness this as a way to create that pride for their school in them. More photos below.

58 -year-old man defiles 6-year-old girl in Niger state A 58-year-old man, Ya’u Ibrahim, was arraigned before the Angwan Senior Magistrate Court in Minna, Niger State for defiling a six-year-old girl.  Ya’u Ibrahim of Kundu village in Rafi Local Government Area of the state, was arraigned in court on two counts charges of unlawful sexual intercourse with a child and exploitation.  The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Aliyu Yakubu Kuta, said the offences contravened sections 26 (2) and 27 (2) of the Niger Child Rights and Protection Law of Niger State 2021 as amended.  MOTHER DUMPS BABY IN REFUSE IN CALABAR 16th August, 2023   An unknown mother has dumped her infant child in a refuse dump in Calabar, Cross River State. In the wee hours of Wednesday,  August 16, an unknown baby was found dead by the dustbin at Palm Street by Atakpa close to Pin Margaret Commercial School, Calabar South LGA. The baby whose gender is female was wrapped in an Ankara wrapper with flies perching on her. Eyewitnesses said that the baby was still alive before giving up the ghost. As of the time of filing this report, details surrounding the woman who dumped her are yet unknown.

‘Emilokan’ can’t win election in Edo State – Obaseki tells Shaibu  Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has said the ‘Emilokan’ slogan will not work during the current electioneering period in the state. Obaseki who made this known while receiving the leaders of Edo South Senatorial District at the Government House said the strategy is strange to the people of the state. IGP RECEIVES COMMANDANT NDC, PLEDGES COLLABORATION. The Inspector-General of Police, Ag. IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD, NPM, has affirmed that the NPF will continue to leverage collaboration opportunities towards fostering capacity development and promoting a culture of continuous learning for Police officers. The IGP made this known while receiving a team from the National Defence College, led by the Commandant, Rear Admiral Olumuyiwa Morankiyo Olotu, during a courtesy visit to the Force Headquarters, Abuja, on August 15, 2023. The Commandant expressed the desire of the College to partner the NPF on all areas of mutual benefit. He further disclosed that a total of 98 police officers have participated in training programs at the NDC so far. The IGP while pledging continued collaboration with the NDC, encouraged the college to allocate more slots for police officers, to aid increased participation and further strengthen the relationship between the NPF and NDC. This was made known during a chat with the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo in her office in Awka where she  described the act as illegality targeted at tarnishing the image of the state government. This was a  reaction to a Facebook user narration of how a lady was held hostage at Upper-weka area of Onitsha over offence of not putting on bra. According to the Facebooker, the victim was accosted by some group of young men claiming to be Anambra State task force team for indecent dressing. She alleged the victim paid the sum of N5,000 to the purported revenue collectors before regaining her freedom, urging Governor Chukwuma Soludo to make categorical statement on the issue to clear if putting on bra is among revenue offences in the state.
