 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud. Manufacturers sack 3,567 workers, unsold goods hit N272bn – MAN No fewer than 3,567 jobs were lost in the manufacturing sector in the first half of 2023 according to figures obtained by The PUNCH from the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria. MAN disclosed this in its half yearly review of the economy, which was released on Tuesday. According to the report, employment generation in the manufacturing sector declined to 6,428 in the first half of 2023. This was 32.8 per cent reduction in employment generation capacity when compared with 9,559 jobs generated in the first half of 2022. The report read partly, “In the same vein, a total of 3,567 jobs were lost in the first half of 2023, indicating 1,855 more jobs lost when compared with the 1,709 jobs lost in the corresponding half of 2022, and 850 more jobs lost when compared with 2708 jobs lost in the last half of 2022.” MAN said the decline in the number of jobs created in the sector during the period further highlighted the unfriendly b

Doctor spends sixth day in kidnappers’ den, colleagues protest Medical Doctors in Kogi State on Tuesday took to the streets in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital, to protest the kidnap of one of their colleagues, Dr Austin Uwumagbe. Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers had last week abducted Uwumagbe, the Director of Victory Hospital-Annex at Ogaminana, in Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State. Flood Destroys Over 200 Communities In Niger Two hundred and twenty communities in fifteen Local Government Areas of Niger state have been displaced by flood this year. Acting Director General Niger State Emergency Management Agency NSEMA Alhaji Salihu Garba stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Minna on their level of preparedness towards mitigating the disaster. Alh Salihu Garba explained that of the number of casualties fifteen communities from Mokwa Local Government Area are presently displaced among whom are Banji, Pawpo, Maregi, Ciwonwuya and Jippu among others. According to him the extent and level of damage by the flood varies from one community to another as well as Local Government and another Local Government Area. Police Confirms Abduction of Lafia Polytechnic Student  Nasarawa State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of a student of Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic Lafia, Nasarawa State during a robbery incident. Police Public Relation Officer PPRO SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the incident in Lafia. According to the PPRO, the police around 10:30pm yesterday received a distress call that armed robbery was taking place in a house at Ombi 1, Lafia near the institution. I have no hands in Mohbad’s death, Naira Marley insists Marlian Music record owner, Azeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has once again cleared the air about his non-involvement in the death of  Nigerian singer, Ilerioluwa Aloba, better known as Mohbad. Naira Marley, in a statement shared on his Instagram handle on Tuesday, expressed his readiness to assist the police in unravelling the circumstances surrounding the death of his former signee, Mohbad. This is coming exactly two weeks after Mohbad was reported dead at the age of 27 in Lagos State. He was buried on September 13. However, following an investigation by the Lagos State Police Command to unravel the cause of his death, Mohbad’s remains were exhumed for an autopsy. Coroner Inquest into cause of Mohbad's d€ath to begin Friday September 29 The Chief Coroner of the Lagos State Judiciary, Justice Mojisola Dada has ordered an inquest into the death of Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly called Mohbad.  A letter signed by the Cororner, Magistrate Taofikat Shotobi and addressed to law firm, Falana and Falana Chambers,  says the inquest will begin its preliminary sitting at the Magistrate Court in Ikorodu on Friday, September 29 by 12 p.m. In a letter dated September 18th, 2023 and addressed to the Chief Coroner of the High Court of Lagos State, Justice Mojisola Dada, the law firm had requested the inquest to unravel the circumstances surrounding what it described as the “very tragic” death of the late Mohbad under “mysterious” circumstances. Senate confirms Olayemi Cardoso as CBN Governor, others The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Mr Olayemi Cardoso as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. Gombe guber poll: Tribunal upholds Inuwa’s victory The Gombe State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal, on Tuesday, upheld the election of Governor Inuwa Yahaya of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the March gubernatorial 18 poll. The tribunal led by Justice S.B Belgore dismissed the petition filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and its candidate, Mohammed Barde, for lacking in merit. DAILY POST recalls that the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, had declared Inuwa the winner of the poll. But the PDP candidate who was not satisfied with the outcome of the election, approached the court to nullify the governor’s victory, alleging that the election was marred by irregularities, including vote-buying. Ruling on the petition, the tribunal declared that the allegations were baseless, stating that the petitioners failed to prove the alleged election malpractices.
