 EFCC Taskforce Arrests 34 Suspected Currency Speculators in Abuja Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, attached to the Taskforce on Currency mutilation, Dollarization of the Economy and Forex Malpractice, have arrested 34 suspected currency speculators  for alleged foreign exchange fraud. 2023 Election: All Eyes Now On The Judiciary - Catholic Bishops Catholic Bishops have appealed to the Judiciary to save the Nigeria’s democracy, arguing that all eyes are now on it to remedy the obvious irregularities that marred the 2023 general elections. The Bishops of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province who met in Umuahia, Abia State, expressed disappointment over the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to live up to its promise to deliver a credible poll. In a communiqué issued after their meeting at Umuahia Diocesan Secretariat, the Bishops urged the Judiciary to redeem the situation in the interest of Nigeria’s democracy. “The hope, at the moment is that the judiciary will rise up to the challenge and rescue our ailing democratic experiment”, the communique read in part. Tears As Bandits Kill Scores, Abduct Many Villagers In Zamfara Community Gunmen suspected to be terrorists attacked Kwatar community, close to Gidan Zala, Kotorkoshi district of Bungudu Local Government Area in Zamfara State, killing scores and kidnapping many villagers. DAILY POST reliably gathered that the bandits invaded the community in the wee hours of Friday without security operatives intervention. Cooking Gas Price To Rise Next Week, Say Marketers Tougher times are ahead of gas consumers, as marketers have hinted that prices will go up next week. The President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Olatunbosun Oladapo, said gas consumers should brace themselves for price hikes starting next week. He cited rising international prices, high tax rates and prices of vessels, forex scarcity, and naira devaluation as some of the reasons for the intended price review. “It is starting next week because international prices have gone up. 17-year-old student falsely accused of stealing iPhone 7 d!es after torture by task force in Adamawa A 17-year-old senior secondary student, Abdullahi Tukur Abba, has died after he was allegedly tortured by security personnel attached to Operation Farauta in Yola, Adamawa State.    The SS 2 student, who was writing his SSCE, was arrested on August 5, 2023, after a neighbour accused him of stealing his iPhone 7 and lodged a complaint with the task force. Abdullahi was allegedly beaten to a stupor by the task force before he was admitted at the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital, Yola where he passed away on Wednesday, August 9.  A counsel for the family of the deceased, Barrister Abubakar Hamman Diram, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Trust in Yola, said Abdullahi died after spending four days in a coma. “A mobile phone was stolen in the neighbourhood and a boy claimed that he took the phone and gave it to Abdullahi. Homeless Nigerian man arrested for allegedly beating 61-year-old woman to dëäth in Italy A 37-year-old homeless Nigerian migrant identified as Nweke Chukwuka, has been arrested for allegedly beating a 61-year-old woman, Iris Setti, to dëäth in Italy.    The attack occurred on Saturday evening, August 5, 2023, at around 10:30 pm in the city of Rovereto in Trento when Iris Setti was walking through a public park in the Santa Maria district of the city and was set upon by the suspect, a Nigerian living on the street.  NAFDAC warns South-East residents against using carbide to ripen fruits The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has warned the general public that fruits ripened with calcium carbide and buying drugs from hawkers is a complete risk that could lead to death. The Director-General, NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stated this on Tuesday, in her keynote address during the media sensitisation workshop on “Dangers of drug hawking and ripening of fruits with calcium carbide”, held in Awka, the Anambra State capital. More information has emerged on the circumstances surrounding the death of the founder of Fountain of Life Church, Lagos Pastor Taiwo Odukoya, who passed away in the US on August 7.  The Nation reports that the respected preacher had health issues mainly triggered by personal tragedies.   A source close to the family was quoted as saying ‘’He really didn’t get over the losses he suffered. He tried to be strong but there is a limit to what a man can take.”   Pastor Taiwo, as he is fondly called, lost his first wife, Pastor Bimbo, in a Sosoliso plane crash in 2005. She was 45. Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging Governor Chukwuma Soludo to direct the Managing Director of Anambra State Road Maintenance Agency to commence palliative work on the dilapidated portion of Àkuzor road Nkpor, Afor Nkpor-Eke Nkpor road and Ugwu Nwasike-Abatete Road in Idemili North Local government area to alleviate the sufferings of commuters. The House passed the resolution following a motion sponsored to that effect by the member representing Idemili North Constituency, Mr Kingsley Udemezue during plenary in Awka. House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that Section fourteen two B of the 1999 Constitution as amended, affirmed that the protection of life and property remains the key function of government. It is on this basis that Mr Udemezue sponsored the motion. Subsidy Removal Will Reduce Carbon Dioxide Emissions - Shettima  Vice President Kashim Shettima said on Tuesday that with the removal of fuel subsidy, Nigeria is projected to save over 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions in one year. Shettima said this at the one-day workshop organised by the National Council on Climate Change with the theme “Unpacking the outcomes of the 58 sessions of the subsidiary bodies of the United Nations framework convention on climate change,” organised by the National Council on Climate Change.
