Amotekun Arrests Gambler Who Faked Kidnapping to Escape Debt

The Ogun Amotekun Corps has arrested a 41-year-old man, Enitan Awoyemi, for allegedly staging his own kidnapping in an attempt to avoid repaying a significant gambling debt.

Awoyemi, a resident of Irolu-Remo in Ikenne Local Government Area, was apprehended on Wednesday following an investigation into the alleged abduction.

According to a statement from the Corps Commander, Alade Adedigba, Awoyemi’s wife, Mrs. Tope Awoyemi, reported the incident on November 10 at the Amotekun Irolu outpost. She claimed that her husband had called her, saying he had been kidnapped the previous day by unknown assailants who demanded a ransom of N5 million for his release.

The Amotekun Intelligence team immediately launched an investigation, uncovering that Awoyemi had accumulated significant gambling debts, amounting to about one million naira, from his regular participation in a lotto game. The suspect, who had previously won N6 million from the same game, used part of his winnings to purchase a Toyota Corolla Sport and a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle for commercial use. Faced with his mounting debts and inability to repay them, Awoyemi allegedly staged the kidnapping.

Through a coordinated effort with the Vigilantes Group of Nigeria (VGN) and local community members, Awoyemi was traced to Ijagba town and later to Ota in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area. He was finally apprehended on November 13 at the Irolu Okada Park during routine patrols by Amotekun officers.

Upon his arrest, the officers noticed a strong smell of insecticide on Awoyemi, raising concerns that he may have attempted suicide. He was quickly taken to Rufina Private Hospital in Iperu for medical care.

Once he is discharged from the hospital, Awoyemi will be handed over to the police in Ilisan for further legal action. Commander Adedigba emphasized the Amotekun Corps' commitment to maintaining law and order, exposing fraudulent activities, and ensuring the safety of Ogun State residents.
