 INFLATION: CBN INCREASES MONITARY POLICY RATE TO 27.25 The Central Bank of Nigeria's Monetary Policy Committee has decided to raise the benchmark interest rate, known as the monetary policy rate, to 27.25 percent. This decision was made at the committee's fifth meeting of the year at the CBN headquarters in Abuja. The monetary policy rate serves as the baseline interest rate in the economy, and all other interest rates within the economy are based on it. The increase from the previous rate of 26.75 percent reflects an 8.5 percent rise in interest rates under the current leadership, which began a year ago. In addition to raising the monetary policy rate, the committee also decided to maintain the asymmetric corridor around the MPR at +500 to -100 basis points. Furthermore, the Cash Reserve Ratio for deposit money banks was increased by 500 basis points to 50 percent, and for merchant banks by 200 basis points to 16 percent.  Hartbeespoortdam police and Brits Crime Intelligence acted swiftly to arrest a 72-year-old landlord following an incident wherein he allegedly shot and killed his tenant on Sunday, 22 September 2024, at a plot outside Hartbeespoortdam near Brits. According to the reports, the 66-year-old tenant approached his landlord when he discovered that there was no electricity and water at his place. Following an argument that ensued between the two, the landlord went inside his house and came back with a firearm and allegedly shot the victim on his upper-body. The suspect fled from the scene while the victim was transported to the hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.  Osun State Government Reduces Workdays For Civil Servants Over Transportation Costs, Hardship The Osun State Government has reduced working days for public workers following a rise in transportation costs, food and other essentials that was triggered by a hike in petrol prices. The announcement was made in a statement signed by Governor Ademola Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, following a circular from the Office of the Head of Service. According to the statement, Servants on GL.01 to GL.10, have three days a week, while Public Servants on GL12 to GL.17, have four days a week.  Female soldier who accused superior of sexual harassment discharged from Army Authorities of the Nigerian Army, on Tuesday announced that it has discharged a female soldier, Private Ruth Ogunleye, who accused a senior officer, Colonel I.B Abdulkareem, of sexual harassment. Army specifically said the female soldier was eased out of the service on medical ground after the conclusion of its probe, adding that by discharging her, she’s entitled to pension and all other benefits for life.  South Korean man admits burying girlfriend in cement as 16-year-old cold case solved Police in South Korea arrested a man who reportedly confessed to killing his girlfriend 16 years ago after her body was discovered in a suitcase encased in cement on his apartment balcony. The man, now in his 50s, admitted to striking her with a blunt object during a heated argument in 2008 when they were living together in an apartment in the southern city of Geoje, police said. After her death due to the trauma to her head, he buried her body in the suitcase under bricks and cement on the balcony, where it remained undetected for years , they said. Fingerprint analysis confirmed that the body, preserved inside the suitcase, was the missing woman. An autopsy revealed she had died from blunt force trauma to the head. “The body hadn’t completely decomposed to bones, allowing us to identify her using fingerprints,” the local police were quoted as saying by AFP. Colonel Assimi Goita, the president of Mali and current chair of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), discussed the project with Ilya Tarasenko, the head of Russian space company Glavkosmos, along with officials from Niger and Burkina Faso in Mali’s capital Bamako on Monday.
