 Police arrest kidnappers who killed victim after collecting N200,000 ransom Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested five suspected kidnappers over the alleged killing of an abducted victim, Smart Nwashiri, 29, after collecting N200,000 ransom. The Commissioner of Police, Funsho Adegboye disclosed this while parading the suspects before newsmen in Benin City. Adegboye gave the names of the suspects as Goodluck Ojieh, 37, (gang leader), Lucky Enagbonmien, 37, Victory Okoro, 32, Sunday Ernest, 32, and Daniel Udi, 29. He said the suspects committed the crime in Ologbo community in Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area, near Benin City. The commissioner told newsmen that the suspects, who hail from Delta State but reside in Edo State, lured the victim into their hideout on the pretence of selling vehicle parts to him.  Rapper Vector reacts as Burna Boy denies receiving gifts from Wike, other politicians Popular rapper, Vector Tha Viper, has reacted to Grammy-winning singer, Burna Boy’s recent claim that he has never received political favours. Recall that ex-Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State had in 2021 announced he would give a plot of land and cash to Burna Boy as appreciation for winning the Grammy Award. However, in a statement in his X handle on Thursday, Burna Boy suggested that Wike didn’t fulfill his promise to him after he won the Grammy. He wrote: “No politician has ever given anything. The FCT police command wishes to debunk the narrative making the rounds about the arrest of a photojournalist, Jide Oyekunle in the ongoing protest taking place around the eagle square, Abuja. Mr Jide Oyekunle was rather taken away from the perceived unsafe environment for his own safety after being advised to leave where he was standing to a safer location and he declined, as some of the protesters had suddenly become violent.  Security agencies have identified senator sponsoring protest, says Wike Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), says security agencies have identified a senator who sponsored protests in the nation’s capital. On Thursday, a youth-led nationwide protest against the rising cost of living kicked off. Speaking after a security council meeting in Abuja, Wike said the unnamed senator provided food for the protesters. “We also have information that a senator had to invite some security agencies to lead some of them to go and provide food for the protesters,” the minister said. “That is sponsorship.  1 million households have benefited from FG’s Cash Transfer Scheme – Wale Edun The Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, has announced that approximately 1 million households have benefited from the federal government’s cash transfer programme since its relaunch.  Edun disclosed this information during a World Press Conference on Wednesday in Abuja.  He noted that around 300,000 payments were made in the past week, with about 5 million individuals benefiting from the scheme to date.  “There are times when what is planned and the timetable that is planned sometimes slip, but the answer is not to now throw out the effort. Sources close to the situation indicate that Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, is contemplating the withdrawal of certain services from Nigeria. Alongside the substantial fine, the FCCPC has directed WhatsApp to cease sharing user data with other Facebook companies and third parties without explicit user consent.  Why I chose to protest – Nursing mother protests with her infant after her husband was killed by bandits. A woman in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has disclosed why she joined the "End Bad Governance in Nigeria" protest despite being a nursing mother. The woman came for the protest with her infant in her hand. She joined other protesters at Eagle Square in Abuja. According to the woman whose identity was not revealed, her husband was killed by bandits in Katsina State and this spurred her to participate in the protest. She added that police are shooting teargas at protesters gathered at Eagle Square and she questioned if they wanted to kill her baby. "I came to protest the hardship in Nigeria and the police are shooting tear gas at us. Do they also want to kill my baby? People cannot eat. Things are hard," she said, according to Newsmen.

  Borno imposes 24-hour curfew after bomb attack rocks market The Borno State Government has announced an immediate 24-hour curfew across the state. This is in response to the tragic detonation of an improvised explosive device in Kawori Market, Konduga area of Borno State on Wednesday night. The explosion suspected to be carried out by a Boko Haram suicide bomber resulted in the deaths of 16 individuals and critical injuries to several others. Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, disclosed this in a Thursday press release obtained by newsmen. Titled, “Imposition of Curfew,”, the statement noted that the bomb explosion prompted Governor Babagana Zulum, to consult with top security officials before implementing this measure. Soludo - Say No To Protests* By Paul Nwosu  The leaders of the youth organizations in Anambra State paid a courtesy visit to Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo CFR, on Wednesday, July 31, at the Governor's Lodge, Amawbia, and stated that they will not undertake any protests whatsoever in the state. And the situation reports coming in from the major urban centres of the State including Awka the capital today, Thursday, August 1, show that they have made-good their assurance.  The leaders of Ohanaeze youths, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Anambra State Association of Town Unions (ASATU) youths etc. stressed that they cannot join the nationwide protests because Anambra State under the watch of Governor Soludo is peaceful and progressing steadily such that they would not partake of any disturbances that may lead to riots and the destruction of the great infrastructural developments put in place by the government.   The yout
