  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements.  TROOPS FOIL KIDNAP ATTEMPT IN DELTA STATE, RESCUE PASSENGERS In a remarkable display of bravery, troops of the Nigerian Army deployed for internal security duties successfully thwarted a kidnap attempt by a suspected terrorist group along the Ughelli-Patani Road in Delta State. The troops' swift response to a distress call resulted in the rescue of passengers who had been kidnapped while traveling in a commercial bus. The troops upon receiving the distress call, rapidly mobilized and confronted the terrorists, who were armed with assorted weapons. A fierce firefight ensued, compelling the terrorists to abandon their captives and flee the scene. The rescued passengers have been taken into safe custody, where they are receiving necessary care and support. Meanwhile, the troops are currently pursuing the fleeing terrorists.  Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz quits Netanyahu's emergency government Israeli war cabinet minister Benny Gantz has quit Benjamin Netanyahu’s emergency government, saying the prime minister was making "total victory impossible."  In announcing his resignation Sunday, Gantz said the government needs to put the return of the hostages seized Oct. 7 by Hamas "above political survival." A centrist member of Israel's three-man war Cabinet and former military chief, Gantz joined Netanyahu's government shortly after the Hamas attack in a show of unity.  Haiti’s new prime minister hospitalized days after being sworn in Haiti’s new prime minister, Garry Conille, was hospitalized late Saturday in the capital of Port-au-Prince, AP reported. It wasn’t immediately known why Conille was hospitalized. In a statement posted to social media Saturday night, the prime minister's office said that Conille was taken to a hospital Saturday afternoon after feeling unwell following a week of "intense activities," describing him as being in stable condition.  Conille was chosen as prime minister on May 28 after a convoluted selection process.  Prolific London child abuser Muhammad Talukdar jailed 14 years     Muhammad Talukdar, 51, a prolific child abuser, has been jailed for 14 years by the Snaresbrook Crown Court for sexually abusing a female child. Talukdar, 51 of Ballance Street, Bath, was sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, 31 May. According to the Met Police, Talukdar began sexually abusing the victim in 1998 when she was just eight years old in Tower Hamlets, east London. The police said specialist officers began investigating in 2020 and that despite having no DNA evidence or recent witness accounts to help strengthen the investigation, officers remained determined to build a case against Talukdar. In 2019 Jegede confirmed the crash of her marriage to actor Olakunle ‘Abounce’ Fawole, barely a year after they tied the knot.  Amaechi: Fubara only popular because he’s anti-Wike    Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation, says he will not take sides in the rivalry between Siminalayi Fubara, the governor of Rivers, and Nyesom Wike. Fubara succeeded Nyesom Wike, who is the current minister of the federal capital territory (FCT), as governor in May 2023. He was the accountant-general under Wike and had his support during the governorship election, but both men fell off shortly after Fubara assumed office. The rift between Fubara and Wike has polarised the Rivers house of assembly. In December 2023, 27 members of the assembly loyal to Wike defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).  Nigerian Teenagers ‘Trafficked’ To Ghana For ‘Prostitution’ Rescued Over 10 Nigerian teenage girls allegedly trafficked to Ghana for prostitution have been rescued, says the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa.  The girls, all under the age of 18, were reportedly lured from Nigeria to Ghana by a nameless man who has now been arrested by the police in neighbouring West African country. According to the NIDCOM boss, the girls were rescued by the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), an umbrella association for Nigerians living in Ghana. In a viral video which showed the girls after they were rescued, a NIDO official was heard saying, “We just rescued all these ones from one single person, innocent Nigerian children that were brought here to do what they wouldn’t have wished do to. “They are helpless.  Tinubu Names Abuja Roads After Chinua Achebe, JP Clark President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday, named roads in the Guzape District Lot II of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after two literary giants — Chinua Achebe and John Pepper Clark-Bekederemo. President Tinubu made this known at the inauguration of engineering infrastructure in Guzape District Lot II. In his speech, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, appealed to the President to name major roads in Guzape District after the two literary giants. The President subsequently approved the minister’s proposal and pronounced the roads as the Chinua Achebe and JP Clark’s during his commissioning. Achebe was born on November 16, 1930  and died on March 21, 2013. He was a Nigerian novelist, poet, and critic.
