 NANS DENIES CLAIMS OF ORGANIZING NATIONWIDE PROTESTS  The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has refuted claims of organizing a protest against the recent increase in petrol prices.  This denial follows the dissemination of a purported statement from the association, announcing plans for a widespread shutdown of major cities in response to the petrol price hike. According to the statement, the group intended to commence protests across major cities in the country from September 15, 2024, and also demanded the reversal of the petrol price increase, as well as the removal of the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.  Fleeing BBL Doctor Arrested Over Lady's Death In Lagos A Lagos State medical doctor, Idara Bassey, who was declared wanted in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman, Abiola during a buttock enlargement surgery popularly known as BBL, has been arrested by the police. The deceased had visited Bassey's clinic at Lekki Phase 1, Lagos State for the buttock enlargement procedure, which tragically ended in her death. BBL is a popular enhancement surgery that sculpts the buttocks while removing excess fat from other body areas. Bassey is currently being investigated at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Panti. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed her arrest.  Pastor Arrested For Killing Landlady's Son, 17 & Burying Him Secretly Inside Room Police operatives from the Ejigbo Division in Lagos have arrested a cleric, Pastor Anthony Israel of the Jesus Disciples Assembly Church, for allegedly killing the son of his landlady, Abdulrahman Olugbade, 17 and secretly burying him inside an uncompleted room. The incident happened on Monday 2nd September, 2024, at Jesus Assembly Street, Omoguwa area of Ejigbo, where he was given an apartment for free by the mother of the deceased, Mrs Temitope Olugbade. What could have led Israel to have murdered the victim, who just passed all his subjects in WAEC exam and was waiting to write JAMB before he was buried secretly, was not disclosed by the Police. The 35-year old Pastor Israel was alleged to have used a knife to slit the victim's throat while he was sleeping. Meta's users in Brazil will receive the warnings starting on Tuesday by email and notifications on Facebook and Instagram and will be able to reject the use of their data by the firm to train generative AI, it said in a statement. Brazil's National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) in July suspended Meta's new privacy policy over the use of personal data to train AI but overturned this last Friday saying Meta had agreed to issue the disclosures. In July, Meta also actively suspended the use of generative AI tools in Brazil, which included tools used to create popular AI-made stickers for messaging platform WhatsApp.

The UK's Grenfell Tower fire disaster that killed 72 people was the result of "decades of failure" by government and construction industry bodies and the "systematic dishonesty" of building material firms, a damning final report said on Wednesday. The fire in the early hours of June 14, 2017 spread rapidly through the 24-storey block in west London due to highly combustible cladding fixed to the exterior. Started in a faulty freezer on the fourth floor, the blaze took barely half an hour to climb to the building's top floor with catastrophic consequences. The highly-critical report marks the end of a two-part independent inquiry led by retired judge Martin Moore-Bick into Britain's worst residential fire since World War II. Unveiling his findings, Moore-Bick said all the 72 deaths as a result of the fire were "all avoidable" and said the victims had been "badly failed". The cause of the fire is unknown.

  NANS declares nationwide protest over fuel price hike, to shut down major cities The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, on Wednesday notification of a planned massive shutdown of all major cities in Nigeria, effective September 15, 2024. The student body said the protest is in response to the recent fuel price hike and the perceived incompetence of the NNPC Director General, Mele Kyari.  Fuel Price Hike: Lagos govt extends work-from-home policy The Lagos State Government has extended its work-from-home policy for workers for the next three months to alleviate the hardship orchestrated by the hike in petrol pump prices. The State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the extension in a circular signed by the state Head of Service, Bode Agoro, on Wednesday. Recall that the governor had on February 28, directed that the workers operate remotely on some days. He directed that workers on grade levels 01 to 14 were allowed to work from home for two days a week, while those on grade levels 15 to 17 were allowed to work from home for one day a week. The decision was aimed at reducing the effects of the removal of fuel subsidies on the workers. Sanwo-Olu stated in Wednesday’s circular that the policy made positive impacts on workers’ productivity in the various ministries, departments, and agencies of the state government. The extension took effect from September 4.

 Police nab quack medical doctor for ‘killing’ patient in Nasarawa Operatives of the Nasarawa State Police Command attached to Kadarko Division have arrested one Isa Usman, a quack medical doctor. The suspect was nabbed on Wednesday at the Iyayi Village, Kadarko district of Keana Local Government Area, LGA of the state for allegedly procuring and administering Procaine Injection on one Zaki Yaka Ajohol which led to his death. The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Ramhan Nansel made this known in a statement he issued on Wednesday. According to the statement, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect whose level of education is the primary school leaving certificate hails from Pindi village, Akko LGA of Gombe State. The suspect claimed to have been trained at Asibitin Yusuf in Agyaragu, Obi LGA of the State.  Ondo man arrested for shooting rival in concubine’s home The Ondo state police command has arrested a 43-year-old man, Mr. Ajagba Joseph, for allegedly attempting to murder a man he found in his concubine’s house. This was made known in a statement shared by the police command on X.com on Wednesday. According to the statement the incident occurred on August 23rd when Joseph visited his lover’s home and met another man, who was also reportedly in a relationship with the same woman. Angered by the situation, Joseph allegedly pulled out a single-barrel gun and shot the other man. The victim survived the attack and is currently recuperating from his injuries. These alleged bandits, who are thought to be illegal miners, launched their attack while many of the male residents were away at work, targeting and vandalizing vehicles and breaking windows.
