 Mpox: Good News As WHO Approves First Jab The World Health Organization (WHO) has for the first time prequalified an Mpox vaccine. The announcement came on the heels of the arrival of the first MVA-BN vaccines to the Democratic Republic of Congo, the epicentre of the epidemic. DRC has recorded nearly 22,000 cases and 716 deaths linked to the virus since January. So far, some 200,000 vaccine doses have been delivered to the DRC by the European Union, along with about 50,000 from the United States. Mpox, previously known as monkeypox, is caused by a virus transmitted to humans by infected animals but can also be passed from human to human through close physical contact. It causes fever, muscular aches and large boil-like skin lesions, and can in some cases be deadly.   Cameroon Health Workers Set to Strike Over Poor Working Conditions Health workers in Cameroon, represented by their union, have announced plans to launch a nationwide strike on September 30, 2024.  The strike, set to take place in front of the Ministry of Public Health in Yaoundé and regional delegations, aims to demand better working conditions.  The union has expressed frustration over unresolved issues, including the exploitation of 27,000 temporary workers without pay, unfair recruitment practices, non-payment of promotions, and poor treatment of staff.  A previous strike notice in July received no response from the government, prompting this latest action.

 Dangote Donates ₦‎1.5 Billion To Borno Flood Victims President of Aliko Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has donated N1.5 billion to victims of the Maiduguri flood disaster. He made the announcement during an assessment visit to some of the affected locations in Maiduguri.Accompanied by Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state, Dangote said out the amount, N1 billion was given to National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to work with the Borno State government. “I just want to clarify, we have this flood committee. NEMA wrote us a letter; so we sat down and approved N1 billion to NEMA to work with the Borno State government.  Kenya protests: Police boss jailed Kenya's acting chief of police was sentenced to six months in prison on Friday after he repeatedly defied orders to testify about the whereabouts of three men who have been missing after allegedly being taken by police officers. The three were outspoken on social media platforms in support of mass anti-government protests in June and July, Reuters reported. The judge at the High Court in Nairobi suspended the sentence for seven days to give Gilbert Masengeli, the acting inspector general of police, a final chance to appear in court before having to report to jail. The case stems from a lawsuit by the country's main bar association, the Law Society of Kenya, which is seeking a court order for the release of three men who it said were taken by the police in August and have not been heard from since.
