  Indian billionaire Gautam Adani charged in US for alleged bribery, fraud Gautam Adani, the chair of Indian conglomerate Adani Group and one of the world’s richest people, whose business empire extends from ports and airports to renewable energy,has been indicted in New York over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud scheme, United States prosecutors have said. The authorities on Wednesday charged Adani and two other executives at Adani Green Energy, his nephew Sagar Adani and Vneet Jaain, with agreeing between 2020 and 2024 to pay more than $250m in bribes to Indian government officials to obtain solar energy supply contracts expected to yield $2bn in profits. Prosecutors said the renewable energy company also raised more than $3bn in loans and bonds during this period based on false and misleading statements.  POLICE ARREST MAN FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER Operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) yesterday night arrested one suspect for using a hammer to inflict serious injury to the head of a 65 years old man around Pako Bus Stop, Iyana Ipaja. The suspect, Sodiq Ishola, 29 years old, was arrested around 8:30 p.m Monday at Iyana Ipaja area after he was restrained and arrested from inflicting further injuries to the head of his victim (name withheld). Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the suspect and one accomplice trailed the victim and his wife from Lagos Island on bike to Iyana Ipaja before Ishola descended on him. He had inflicted severe injuries to the head of his victim before RRS operatives on patrol arrested him.  Soldier commits suicide at army camp in Abia A senior non-commissioned officer serving under the 14 Brigade Headquarters, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Barrack in Ohafia, Abia State, has reportedly committed suicide. The soldier, identified as Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Vitalis, an indigene of Okpuala in Ngor-Okpuala, Imo State, was attached to the 144 Battalion’s Forward Operation Base (FOB) located at Ngwa High School, Abayi, Osisioma local government area. He tragically shot himself in front of the FOB gate. The reasons behind CSM Vitalis’s decision to end his life remain unclear as no suicide note was found. Sources within the security agencies in the state have indicated that only a thorough investigation can reveal what prompted his actions, cautioning against any premature conclusions.  Arizona woman facing felony charges after leaving her 4-year-old daughter in a hot car while she shopped on a 110 degree day. Nicole Yazzie is being charged with felony child abuse after bystanders noticed her 4-year-old daughter locked in a sweltering hot car while her mother shopped for clothing. As officers arrived on scene, Yazzie came out of the store and unlocked the rear door of the vehicle giving first responders access to her daughter. Officers reported the temperature inside of the car as around 129 degrees. They say the young child was pale and disoriented and had urinated in her pants. She was immediately given water and medical treatment before being put inside of an air-conditioned police cruiser where she seemed to fully recover.  UNIBEN graduate ‘beaten, raped to death’ in Edo   A female student of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) identified as Adekolore Idowu Glory has been reportedly raped to death. Glory, 22, a recent graduate of the university, was said to have been beaten and raped to death at Iyowa Community, Benin City on June 13. In an X post, a user who identified as Glory’s brother said unknown men attacked her while she was on her way back home from school. Glory, who graduated in April this year, was said to have been processing her clearance when she was killed. Her body was reportedly left close to her house.  Gunmen kill okada union official in Ekiti     The Ekiti state police command says a man was killed on Tuesday by two men riding on a commercial motorcycle, popularly known as okada in Ado-Ekiti. The middle-aged man, whose identity is yet to be known, was shot dead in broad daylight by unidentified gunmen around the popular Okesa roundabout in Ado-Ekiti. The deceased was said to have been shot moments after he asked to know if the gunmen had obtained their Okada union ticket for the day. The incident led people around the area to scamper for safety, as many hurriedly closed shops and offices for fear of reprisals by members of the Okada union. Witnesses said the victim was one of the officials of the union engaged in issuing tickets to commercial motorcyclists around the Okesa roundabout. According to the agency, cooked food stored in the refrigerator for days is susceptible to contamination by disease-causing pathogens, key agents of foodborne diseases that can lead to death. Food safety incidents are situations where there is a potential or confirmed health risk associated with food consumption. A food incident can happen, for example, due to accidents, inadequate controls, food fraud, or natural events.  Amusan wins fourth straight national women’s 100m hurdles title World record holder Tobi Amusan secured her fourth national title in the women’s 100m hurdles at the national trials on Monday, finishing with an impressive time of 12.78 seconds.  The 27-year-old sprinter dominated the race, with Adaobi Tabugbo coming in second at 13.33 seconds and Faith Osamuyi taking third place at 13.36 seconds.  Amusan, from Ogun State, thrilled the fans in Benin with her hurdling prowess as she successfully defended her national title. This victory serves as a promising warm-up for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

 Secret Service agent robbed at gunpoint during President Biden's trip to Southern California A Secret Service agent was robbed at gunpoint in California over the weekend, according to local law enforcement. It happened at the same time President Biden was in California for a star-studded Los Angeles fundraiser. On Saturday, June 15, just after 9:30 p.m., the Tustin Police Department said officers responded to a call about a possible robbery that happened at the Tustin Fields 1 residential community. Upon arrival, officers discovered the victim was a member of the Secret Service and that his bag was stolen at gunpoint. During the incident, police said an agent-involved shooting happened. The suspect(s) were not found, and it is unknown at this time whether the suspect(s) was injured as a result of the incident, police said.  Wanted Florida man caught after phone rings while hiding in ceiling: deputies A wanted Florida man was taken into custody on Saturday after his phone tipped off deputies that he was hiding from them in the ceiling of a business, authorities said. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said 38-year-old Joshua Garrett was arrested and charged with resisting arrest and felony criminal mischief. According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded to a disturbance near US 98 North and Duff Road in Lakeland, Florida. When the deputies arrived, they were told the man causing the disturbance, later identified as Garrett, had left the business. After identifying the man as Garrett, deputies learned he was wanted for violating his probation, which he was given after being convicted of burglary, providing false information to a pawn broker and trafficking of stolen property.
