Uganda signs deal with UAE to build third international airport Uganda has signed a pact with a business association from the United Arab Emirates to build a new international airport, President Yoweri Museveni's office said on Friday. The UAE's Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry will build the airport just outside the Kidepo National Park in the northeast near Uganda's border with Kenya, Museveni's office said in a statement, without giving the cost, Reuters reported. Construction will start in August, said Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, chairman of the Sharjah business body. The airport will boost tourism by drawing visitors to the 1,442-sq-km (557-sq-mile) Kidepo park known for lions, giraffes, buffaloes and other big game. The agreement was "a sign of the deepening relations with our Gulf partners and another opportunity to co-operate in investment and trade", Museveni, who witnessed the signing, said in a post on X.

"We are ready to fight," President Kagame responds to DRC In an exclusive interview with France 24, Rwandan President Paul Kagame declared Rwanda's readiness to go to war with the Democratic Republic of Congo if necessary, stating, 'they are ready to fight and are not afraid of anything.' This follows accusations from Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi, who claimed Rwanda is organizing a genocide in Eastern DRC. Kagame responded by accusing Tshisekedi of promoting a genocidal ideology against Congolese Tutsis. Kagame also refused to confirm the presence of Rwandan soldiers in the DRC, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of regional tensions. These statements underscore the rising tensions between Rwanda and the DRC and highlight the challenges facing Kagame as the election approaches." The decades-long conflict in eastern Congo has produced one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 100 armed groups fighting in the region, most for

After Hezbollah threatens Cyprus, Lebanese officials try to preserve friendly relations Lebanese government officials worked Thursday to maintain friendly relations with Cyprus a day after the militant Hezbollah group threatened to attack the Mediterranean island if it allows Israel to use its territories to attack Lebanon. Lebanon's state news agency said Foreign Minister Abdallah Bouhabib told his Cypriot counterpart that Beirut relies on the positive role that Cyprus plays in support of stability in the Middle East. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah warned Cyprus in a rare threat not to allow Israel’s military to use its airports on the island to bomb Lebanon should a full-blown war break out between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah.  Some Lebanese media outlets reported earlier Thursday that the Cypriot embassy was closed, but the mission later clarified that they were not accepting visa applications for administrative updates and the embassy will be introducing an appoint

CHINA SILENT AS RUSSIA AND NORTH KOREA FORGE NEW DEFENSE PACT, RAISING REGIONAL POWER SHIFT CONCERN. (PHOTO).

China silent as Russia and North Korea forge new defense pact, raising regional power shift concerns With no obvious options, China appears to be keeping its distance as Russia and North Korea move closer to each other with a new defense pact that could tilt the balance of power among the three authoritarian states. Experts say China's leaders are likely fretting over potential loss of influence over North Korea after its leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the deal this week, and how that could increase instability on the Korean Peninsula. But Beijing may also be struggling to come up with a response because of its conflicting goals: keeping peace in the Koreas while countering the U.S. and its Western allies on the global stage. Beijing so far has not commented on the deal — which requires both countries to provide defense assistance if the other is attacked — and only reiterated boilerplate statements that it seeks to uphold peace and stability on the

Supreme Court upholds federal gun ban for those under domestic violence restraining orders The Supreme Court Friday upheld a federal law that bans guns for those subject to domestic violence restraining orders (DVROs) in the first major test of the Second Amendment at the high court this term. In an 8-1 opinion authored by Chief Justice Roberts, the court's majority said, "[W]e conclude only this: An individual found by a court to pose a credible threat to the physical safety of another may be temporarily disarmed consistent with the Second Amendment." Justice Clarence Thomas was the lone dissenter. Both liberal and conservative justices agreed with the Biden administration that there was a history and tradition of keeping firearms from dangerous persons, despite the lack of any specific ban that may have been in place when the Constitution was enacted in the 1790s. The case, U.S. v. Rahimi, is first major test of the Second Amendment since a high court ruling in 2022 ex

The eviction order was issued by the state’s Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi. However, the CP said obeying the eviction order would amount to preempting the courts.  Namibian court declares laws banning gay sex unconstitutional In a historic ruling on Friday, June 21, a Namibian high court declared unconstitutional two colonial-era laws that criminalized same-sex acts between men. This decision marks a significant victory for the LGBTQ community in Namibia, AP reported. The case was initiated by Namibian activist Friedel Dausab, with support from the UK-based Human Dignity Trust. Following the court's decision, Dausab expressed his joy, stating, "It's a great day for Namibia. It won't be a crime to love anymore."  Rights activists have noted that, although prosecutions under the "sodomy" and "unnatural sexual offences" laws were infrequent, these laws have fostered ongoing discrimination against the LGBTQ community and instilled fear of arrest among gay men. Namibia inherited the laws when it gained independence from South Africa in 1990, though same-sex acts between men were initially criminalised under c
