Minister Cautions Kwankwaso Against Contempt of Court in Kano Emirate Council Dispute
Yusif Abdullahi Ata, the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development, has warned Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the 2023 presidential candidate for the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), against making “contemptuous statements” regarding the ongoing legal dispute over the Kano Emirate Council.
The minister urged Senator Kwankwaso to avoid remarks that could exacerbate divisions in the country or risk being seen as in contempt of court concerning the legal proceedings related to the Kano Emirate issue.
Ata’s comments followed allegations made by Kwankwaso, who claimed there was external interference from Lagos in the selection of Kano’s Emir. Speaking at the convocation of Skylight University, Kwankwaso accused Lagos of trying to influence the process, stating, “Today, we can clearly see there is significant effort from the Lagos axis to polarize this part of the country... Lagos wouldn’t allow us to choose our Emir.”
In response, Ata emphasized that the matter is still before the courts and cautioned that Kwankwaso’s statements could be viewed as undermining the judicial process. Ata further highlighted the importance of responsible leadership in promoting national unity, rather than fueling discord and uncertainty among the people.
