The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has disclosed that over 3,767 people lost their lives in 7,011 road traffic crashes (RTCs) across Nigeria between January and September 2024.

FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed revealed the statistics in Bauchi yesterday during the flag-off of the 2024 World Road Traffic Crash Victims Remembrance Week, held at St John’s Evangelist Cathedral Church.

The event, themed “That Day”, was designed to reflect on the days that road traffic accidents either ended lives or irreversibly altered their course.

The Bauchi State Sector Commander, MrIstifanus Ibrahim, represented the Corps Marshal at the occasion.

Mohammed added that, within the period under review, over 22,373 individuals sustained various degrees of injuries from road crashes. He lamented that Nigeria, the most populous country in sub-Saharan Africa, faces significant challenges due to the frequency and impact of road accidents.

The Corps Marshal explained that the Remembrance Week aims to honour those who lost their lives or are currently recovering in hospitals and appreciate the efforts of emergency services.

He also noted the need for stronger legal responses to culpable road deaths and advocated for better support systems for road crash victims and their families.

Mohammed highlighted that religious platforms were being utilised to spread the message of road safety, with activities planned at both churches and mosques throughout the week.

He reiterated the importance of collaboration between the government and all stakeholders to enhance vehicular safety by adopting the Safe System Approach.
