Army Reopens Umuahia-Mbaise Road, Relocates Checkpoint After Attack
The Nigerian Army has reopened the Umuahia-Mbaise road, which had been closed following an attack on a military checkpoint at Ekenobizi last Wednesday.
The decision to reopen the road came after a visit by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Hassan Dada, accompanied by senior military officers, including Brigadier General Olusola Diya, Commander of the 14 Brigade, Ohafia.
During the visit, the GOC’s team, in collaboration with the Special Adviser to the Abia State Governor on Security, Navy Commander (retd.) MacDonald Ubah, agreed to relocate the military checkpoint from its original position at Ekenobizi to a new location near the Onuimo River. The new site provides a better vantage point, improving security operations.
Commander Ubah explained that the original checkpoint was situated in a built-up area, which hindered the military's ability to respond effectively to attacks. He added that local leaders, including the traditional ruler of Ezeleke Autonomous Community, HRH Eze Ibeakanma, had supported the relocation and worked with the military to facilitate the move.
He also noted that community members had volunteered to help clear the new checkpoint site and promised to assist security forces by providing crucial information to enhance safety in the area.
The road closure, which forced motorists to seek alternative routes, followed the deadly attack that claimed the lives of two soldiers. With the road now reopened, it is expected to ease travel and restore normalcy to the region.
