A tourist visiting Australia got his leg stuck between boulders while kayaking, resulting in a 20-hour ordeal that ended with an on scene emergency amputation this morning.
According to authorities in Tasmania, a tourist in his 60's was kayaking with some friends. As the group traversed a series of rapids the man was ejected from his kayak. Somehow, the man's leg became wedged in between two boulders, leaving him stuck and partially submerged in the icy waters for 20 hours.
The call for assistance came in at approximately 3:30 p.m. on November 22nd. Rescue workers and EMS made several attempts to free the man throughout the evening and overnight, but ultimately were unsuccessful.
On the morning of November 23rd the man's condition was significantly deteriorating and after consulting with the man, the decision was made to amputate his leg.
A medical team arrived on scene with specialized equipment and successfully amputated the man's leg finally freeing him from the icy river water.
Following the amputation, the man was airlifted to the Royal Hobart Hospital where he remains in critical condition.
We hope the man recovers fully.
