 Police Arrest Alleged Kidnap Kingpin in Rivers The Rivers State Police Command has apprehended 30-year-old Nwile Bete, a suspected kidnap leader, during an operation in Port Harcourt. The operation also resulted in the rescue of a 10-year-old boy who had been kidnapped by Bete. Police spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Friday. Bete allegedly abducted the boy on November 25 and demanded a ransom of N5 million for his release. The boy's mother reported the abduction, prompting the police's Anti-Kidnapping Unit to take action. Based on credible intelligence, officers tracked Bete to Rumuekeni School Road in Port Harcourt, where he was arrested. After his capture, Bete confessed to the crime and led police to Sogho village in the Khana area, where the boy was found unharmed and reunited with his family.   SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
