 Court grants Dele Farotimi ₦30m bail Human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi has been granted ₦30 million bail by a Magistrate court in Ekiti State. The court also asked Farotimi to provide 3 sureties with a landed property within the jurisdiction. He was told to refrain from media interview and to submit his international passport. The case has been adjourned till 13th February 2025. Farotimi, who has been remanded in a correctional centre in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital for over two weeks, arrived at the Magistrate Court premises around 9:45 am on Friday. He was conveyed to the court premises in a prison’s van with a police escort, alighting while raising his hands up in appreciation of a cheering crowd outside the court. His bail comes after the magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, had at the last sitting, reserved ruling till December 20 on the bail application and ordered that the activist be remanded in prison.During the court proceedings, Farotimi pleaded not guilty to the 14-coun...

 Southampton Set to Appoint Ivan Jurić as New Head Coach Southampton Football Club has agreed to hire Ivan Jurić as its new head coach, following the departure of Russell Martin. Sports journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Friday via X that the deal is expected to be finalized with the signing of the contract later today.  The terms have been verbally agreed upon, with the focus now on negotiating Jurić's release from his current position at AS Roma. Jurić has reportedly accepted the offer, but contrary to earlier speculation, he will not be bringing Rohl with him.

 Reps to Present N704.91m Salary Donation to Tinubu on December 31 The House of Representatives has announced plans to donate N704.91 million to support vulnerable Nigerians, in response to the economic challenges caused by the removal of the petrol subsidy. The donation will be presented to President Tinubu on December 31, 2024. This initiative follows a resolution passed on July 18, when the House agreed to cut 50 percent of their salaries for six months in a bid to assist ordinary Nigerians during these tough times. The donation, amounting to N704,907,578.82, will be used exclusively for the welfare of vulnerable citizens. Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, informed his colleagues during Thursday’s plenary that the total contribution from lawmakers so far had reached the stated amount.  The principal of a government school in Vaishali district, Bihar, was caught on camera stealing eggs meant for the children’s midday meals.  The incident occurred at a middle school in Rikhar village, Lalganj block, and the video of the act, said to be from December 12, has since gone viral on social media. The principal, identified as Suresh Sahani, was seen putting the eggs into his bag and taking them away, sparking outrage among parents and the local community. Following the video’s circulation, the state education department launched an investigation and confirmed the authenticity of the footage. In a notice issued to Sahani, the department questioned why an FIR should not be filed against him for theft. The notice also criticized the principal for tarnishing the reputation of the education department.  Ekiti Airport to Welcome Private Jets from January 2025 – Governor Oyebanji Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has announced that the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Cargo Airport will officially open for private jet landings starting in January 2025. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has granted approval for non-scheduled flight operations, which began on December 13, 2024, and will continue until June 15, 2025. During a visit to elder statesman Chief Afe Babalola, Oyebanji expressed gratitude for his significant support in the airport’s development. The governor also revealed plans to seek further assistance from Babalola to secure full commercial flight operations at the airport. The move is seen as a major step in enhancing Ekiti’s transportation infrastructure and boosting economic opportunities for the state.

 Mississippi woman takes ex husband's life at the courthouse after their divorce is finalized. Husband had an open case in courts for domestic violence after shooting his wife 5 times just a year earlier. 62-year-old James Saucier and his estranged wife, 49-year-old Tanya, had experienced a volitale relationship. The current victim, James, was facing domestic violence charges in an upcoming March trial in which he was accused of shooting Tonya 5 times last year. James's attorney claims he had acted in self defense in regards to that case. It was because of this sordid past that arrangements had been made for neither participant to have contact with each other as they went through divorce proceedings on Tuesday, December 17th.  FG and 22 States Allocate N6.13trn to Education in 2025 Budget The Federal Government and 22 of Nigeria’s 36 states have earmarked N6.131 trillion for education in their 2025 budgets. This allocation represents just 9.27% of the total proposed budget of N66.111 trillion, falling short of the recommended benchmarks set by Nigeria, UNESCO, and the World Bank. UNESCO advocates for a 26% allocation of national and state budgets to education, while the World Bank recommends a range of 20% to 30%. Similarly, Nigeria’s National Policy on Education mandates that at least 26% of both federal and state budgets be dedicated to education. Out of the 33 states that have announced their 2025 budgets, only 22 have disclosed their education spending. Among these, Enugu (32.99%), Kano (31%), Jigawa (26.4%), and Kaduna (26.14%) met the 26% threshold set by UNESCO and Nigeria.  Address cash scarcity urgently – NLC tells Nigerian  The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has urged the Federal Government to immediately wade into the issue of cash scarcity across the country. NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, made this call in a communique he jointly signed with Mr Emmanuel Ugboaja, General Secretary of NLC on Thursday in Abuja. The communique was issued at the end of the National Executive Council, NEC, meeting held in Owerri. According to Ajaero, the NEC in-session had expressed concern over the persistent cash scarcity in Nigeria, describing it as an unfortunate and exploitative burden on the already struggling populace.  National Sports Festival Postponed to May 2025 The National Sports Festival, "Gateway Games, Ogun 2024," has been rescheduled from January 12-28, 2025, to May 16-30, 2025. The postponement allows the newly established National Sports Commission (NSC) time to stabilize and build a sustainable sports economy.  The decision was made following recommendations from the Technical Directors during a meeting in Abeokuta. The event will now include standout junior athletes from the National Youth Games. Zonal eliminations for team sports are set for February 23-28, 2025.

 ANAMBRA STATE POLICE COMMAND ARRESTS THREE SUSPECTED CULTISTS/SECURITY OPERATIVE, IMPOSTERS: RECOVER ONE AUTOMATIC PUMP ACTION GUN In the early hours of today 18th December 2024, Operatives of the Special Anti-Cultism Squad of the Nigerian Police Enugwu Ukwu, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State arrested one Chidi Ekwesiri (M) aged 50 years from Umunya, Oyi LGA and two others.  They also recovered one automatic pump action gun and a Police uniform from the suspects.  The Operatives spotted the suspect while on surveillance patrol along the Onitsha - Enugu Expressway by Unizik Temp Site. During interrogations, the suspect claimed to be a Sergeant and a serving member of the Nigeria Police Force in Lagos but later denied his earlier claim.
