 Police Detain Human Rights Lawyer Farotimi Over Defamation Charges Human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi has reportedly been arrested by operatives of the Nigerian Police Force. The arrest was first announced by Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, via a post on his X account on Tuesday. Sowore demanded Farotimi's immediate release, stating that the police should not be used to settle personal disputes. Ododo Presents N582.4b 2025 Budget to Kogi Lawmakers Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Ododo, has presented the 2025 Appropriation Bill of N582,404,119,489 to the Kogi State House of Assembly for approval. The budget proposal, titled the ‘Budget of Inclusive Development,’ was submitted during the Assembly’s plenary session on Tuesday. This marks Ododo’s first budget presentation since he assumed office on January 27, 2024, succeeding his predecessor, Yahaya Bello. The proposed budget allocates N279,590,215,687 (48.01%) for recurrent expenditure and N302,813,903,802 (51.99%) for capital expenditure. This budget is an increase of N176,082,989,476 (43.34%) compared to the revised 2024 budget of N406,321,130,013.  706 Ballot Boxes Destroyed in Fire at INEC Office in Delta The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed a fire incident at its office in Ika North East Local Government Area, Delta State. In a statement posted on its official X handle on Tuesday, INEC reported that the fire destroyed approximately 706 ballot boxes, 50 election bags, 322 apron vests, and various other items. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Delta State, Mr. Etekamba Udo Umoren, confirmed the incident, explaining that it occurred on Monday afternoon due to a power surge following the restoration of public electricity supply. The fire completely razed the section of the store where petrol generators and other materials were stored.  Early Morning Fire Claims Lives of Customs Officer, Wife, and Four Children in Osun A tragic fire in the early hours of Monday in Ede, Osun State, claimed the lives of six family members, including a Customs officer, Tijani Kabiru, his wife, and their four children. The incident occurred around 2 am at their home in the Olowopoku area. Reports indicate that the fire, believed to have originated from an electric spark in a solar panel installed on the roof, began at approximately 2:09 am. Kabiru, in his late 40s, was asleep with his wife and five children when the fire rapidly spread through the building. One of the children, a 13-year-old, was reading when the fire started. Realizing the danger, the child rushed to his father’s room, only to find the family struggling due to smoke inhalation.  Bandits Kidnap Former House of Reps Member Joseph Haruna Kigbu On Monday evening, bandits abducted Joseph Haruna Kigbu, a former member of the House of Representatives, while he was en route to Jos. The incident took place around 6:00 p.m. between Nunku in Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and Gwantu in Sanga Local Government Area, Kaduna State. During the attack, the assailants killed the police escort assigned to Dr. Kigbu, who had tried to thwart the abduction. A source reported that the bandits fired their weapons indiscriminately, causing widespread panic among motorists in the area. Local residents confirmed that the incident occurred in a region known for frequent criminal activities.
