Reps to Present N704.91m Salary Donation to Tinubu on December 31

The House of Representatives has announced plans to donate N704.91 million to support vulnerable Nigerians, in response to the economic challenges caused by the removal of the petrol subsidy. The donation will be presented to President Tinubu on December 31, 2024.

This initiative follows a resolution passed on July 18, when the House agreed to cut 50 percent of their salaries for six months in a bid to assist ordinary Nigerians during these tough times. The donation, amounting to N704,907,578.82, will be used exclusively for the welfare of vulnerable citizens.

Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, informed his colleagues during Thursday’s plenary that the total contribution from lawmakers so far had reached the stated amount. He added that a delegation from the House leadership would formally hand over the funds to the president on December 31.

The move was initiated after a motion by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, calling for the salary sacrifice to help mitigate the hardship faced by many Nigerians. At the time, Kalu urged his colleagues to donate 50 percent of their salaries for six months, stressing that while the government is doing its best, more time is needed to address the country’s challenges.
