 A woman in China and her accomplices have been sentenced to prison for orchestrating a marriage scam to defraud her husband.  The plan involved accusing the husband of visiting a prostitute, allowing the woman to file for divorce and keep the bride price – a traditional payment in China often exceeding 100,000 yuan ($13,700). The case took place in Longli County, Guizhou Province, and was reported by the South China Morning Post (SCMP). The woman, identified as Ms. Xiong, and her boyfriend, Mr. Li, were in debt earlier this year when they sought financial help online. They met two men who suggested the fraudulent scheme. The men explained that by framing the groom, Ms. Xiong could secure a divorce without returning the bride price. Initially hesitant, Ms. Xiong agreed after being persuaded by her boyfriend and the men. Ms. Xiong later met Mr. Bao, a prospective groom, through a matchmaking agency.  YULETIDE SECURITY IN ANAMBRA: POLICE-LED SECURITY FORCES DESTROY CRIMINAL CAMP IN NIMO, RECOVER 19 IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES


In the early hours of December 24, 2024, a joint security operation led by the Nigeria Police Force and comprising the Military, Civil Defence, and Anambra Vigilante operatives successfully dismantled a criminal camp located in Nimo, Njikoka Local Government Area. The operation resulted in the destruction of several makeshift structures within the camp, the recovery of 19 unexploded improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and inflicted significant injuries on fleeing suspects.  


This decisive action followed credible intelligence on the activities of the criminal gang in the area, coupled with information obtained during the interrogation of suspects arrested in ongoing police operations across the state.  


The Commissioner of Police, *CP Nnaghe Obono Itam* commends the synergy between the security agencies and the vigilance of the public in providing actionable intelligence. He emphasizes the importance of continued collaboration to ensure the safety and security of all residents during and after the festive season.  


In light of this development, the Commissioner of Police strongly urges all proprietors of private and public hospitals to immediately report any individual presenting with bullet wounds or injuries of a suspicious nature to the nearest police station. This measure is critical to the ongoing effort to apprehend fleeing suspects and prevent further criminal activity.  


The Anambra State Police Command assures the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining security dominance through sustained patrols and targeted operations aimed at ensuring a peaceful yuletide season for all.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
