Sokoto killings: ‘We’re sorry’ – Shettima apologises to victims’ families

Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has apologised to the families of the victims of the bombing in Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

This was contained in a statement by his media aide, Stanley Nkwocha, on Saturday.

10 people were killed in airstrikes on Wednesday, December 25, when the military targeted a logistics base of the Lakurawa insurgent group in two communities in the LGA.

Three days later, Shettima extended his condolences to the families of those mistakenly hit during the military’s operation against the terrorist group.

According to him, it was a rare and deeply saddening instance in which innocent civilians became unintended victims of the ongoing efforts to rid the country of terror.

“I must say we are sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred and the excruciating pain that ensues during these extremely difficult times.

“I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives in the coordinated joint operation by the air and land components of Operation Fansan Yamma to eliminate Lakurawa terrorist groups at Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities in Silame Local Government Area,” he said.

The Vice President called for understanding and support for the armed forces, emphasising their sacrifices in protecting the lives of those caught in the crossfire.

Shettima expressed regret over the incident and solicited more support for the troops.

He stated that with the provision of useful information, officers could maintain greater accuracy and precision in identifying terrorists among innocent villagers they strive to protect.

He assured the people of Sokoto State of the Federal Government’s commitment, vowing that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration would not relent until terror groups and other criminal elements are completely eradicated from the country.

“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologise for this great loss. I urge you to continue to provide our brave officers with the assistance they need in carrying out their operations to ensure a safer country for all of us.

“We have all been impressed by the courage and dedication of our troops, as well as by the dignity and resilience that drive their determination to prevail against such monstrous evil.

“Security is not one man’s business. Together, we will surely make a difference as a people. I sincerely call for your support, especially from those in the flashpoints of the war against terror, who have always been instrumental to the success of our military operations,” he added.
