NYSC Denies Querying 200 Corps Members Over Christmas Carol

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has refuted claims that it issued queries to 200 corps members in Oyo State for participating in a Christmas carol event.

Reports circulating online alleged that corps members serving in Atiba Local Government Area were penalized for missing a carol party held on December 20, 2024. However, in a statement on Friday, NYSC spokesperson Eddy Megwa dismissed the claims as unfounded.

“The NYSC respects the religious rights of all corps members and is committed to fostering unity and tolerance,” Megwa stated.

According to Megwa, the queries were unrelated to any religious activity and were issued due to absenteeism during mandatory Community Development Service (CDS) activities, the 2024 holiday headcount, and their places of primary assignment.

The affected corps members also failed to secure written permission to travel outside the state between December 16, 2024, and January 6, 2025, as required by NYSC regulations.

“The queries serve as a corrective measure under the NYSC bylaws and have no connection with the alleged Christmas carol,” Megwa clarified.

She emphasized that CDS activities are mandatory and a condition for obtaining the Certificate of National Service, urging the public to disregard misleading reports intended to incite religious tension.

The NYSC reiterated its commitment to transparency and encouraged balanced reporting of its activities.
