Armed Forces Remembrance Day: Shettima, Akpabio Lead Tributes to Fallen Heroes

Vice President Kashim Shettima, alongside Senate President Godswill Akpabio and other dignitaries, paid homage to Nigeria’s fallen and living heroes during the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) in Abuja.

The ceremony, held at the National Arcade, featured a wreath-laying session led by the Vice President. Other participants included the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas (represented by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu), Chief Justice of Nigeria Kudirat Kerere-Ekun, Minister of Defence Muhammed Badaru, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and top military chiefs.

Members of the diplomatic corps, Nigerian Legion, and widows of fallen soldiers, represented by Veronica Aluko of the Military Widows Association (MIWA), also participated. The event concluded with the firing of three volleys to honor the dead, signing of the anniversary register, and the release of ceremonial pigeons symbolizing peace.

The celebration, now known as the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day, included Jumma’at prayers, interdenominational Christian services, regimental dinners, and awards for military personnel. The Defence Headquarters also showcased locally produced military equipment and hosted an art exhibition.

January 15 is annually dedicated in Nigeria to honor those who sacrificed their lives during global wars, the Nigerian Civil War, peacekeeping missions, and internal security operations. It also serves as a platform to seek support for the families of fallen heroes and to celebrate serving personnel for their dedication to peace and security.
