 NUC Approves Six New Academic Programs for Plateau State University The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved six new academic programs for Plateau State University Bokkos (PLASU). Speaking at the 92nd regular Senate meeting on January 10, 2025, the Acting Vice Chancellor and Senate Chairman, Professor Shedrack Gaya Best, announced the approval of degrees in Medical Sciences (MBBS), Pharmaceutical Sciences (Pharm D.), Statistics (B.Sc.), and Religious Studies (B.A.). Additionally, the university received endorsements from professional bodies for its new programs in Law and Nursing Sciences.  Mali seizes 3 tonnes of gold from Canadian firm Barrick Mali's military government has started seizing gold stocks of the Canadian mining company Barrick as part of a legal battle over the share of revenue owed to the West African state, according to an internal Barrick letter seen by The Associated Press. The letter from CEO Mark Bristow to staff, dated on Monday, says Barrick is “awaiting official confirmation of the proper receipt by the Malian Solidarity Bank,” a government entity.  Power generation increased by 30% in 2024 – Minister Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu has said that power generation in Nigeria increased by about 30 per cent in 2024. Adelabu made the disclosure during his ministry’s 2025 budget defence before the Senate Committee on Power at the National Assembly complex. He said that when he assumed the leadership of the ministry in 2023, he met an average of 4,100 megawatts of power generation. “I can tell you authoritatively that by the end of 2024, we had a peak generation of 5,528 megawatts of power from 4,100 megawatts that we met on ground. “And the reason for this is not far-fetched. We added a new hydroelectric power dam, Zungeru, with 700 megawatts. “There was also a tremendous increase in the generation lines by other existing generation companies,” he said.  Soldier Arrested at Borno Express Terminal with Ammunition A soldier identified as Nathaniel Jeremiah, has been arrested by personnel of the 7 Division at the Borno Express Terminal Park in Maiduguri for illegal possession of ammunition. Intelligence sources told Zagazola Makama that Jeremiah, who was on welfare pass and en route to Adamawa State, was apprehended while attempting to board a vehicle at the terminal. During the routine search, security operatives discovered 89 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition concealed in his personal bag. The soldier was immediately taken into custody for interrogation, and the recovered ammunition has been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation.

According to a statement by PSC spokesperson Ikechukwu Ani, six other officers faced rank reductions for related offences, including two Superintendents demoted to Deputy Superintendents, one Deputy Superintendent reduced to Assistant Superintendent, and three Assistant Superintendents demoted to Inspectors. The actions were part of the PSC’s deliberations during its second plenary meeting held at its headquarters in Jabi, Abuja.  Strike: I’m not owing judiciary workers — Otti replies NBA.  Abia State Governor Alex Otti has reacted to the ongoing strike action by members of the Abia State chapter of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, JUSUN, saying that the union’s leaders have refused to credit the workers with over three hundred million naira released by his administration. Otti, who spoke at Queen Elizabeth Chapel in Umuahia on Sunday during the 2025 Armed Forces Celebration service, said his attention was drawn to newspaper reports where the NBA had advised him to pay judiciary workers.  Anyanwu resumes as PDP National Secretary amid crisis Embattled Samuel Anyanwu has resumed office as National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. It was gathered that he arrived at the party secretariat around 10:56am and headed straight for his office where he was received by his personal staff. Speaking to newsmen while sitting at his desk, Anyanwu dismissed a statement credited to the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba. Ologunagba had confirmed to reporters that the party had received the Appeal Court judgment recognizing Sunday Okoye as National Secretary. In response, Anyanwu said: “That is his opinion.  How ‘Yahoo boy’ beheaded Abuja corps member, packed dismembered body in bag – Police Operatives of the Nasarawa State Police Command have arrested a suspected Yahoo boy, internet fraudster, identified as Ajayi for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Salome Enejo for rituals. The suspect was caught with a fresh human head in Agwan Sarki, Orozo, a boundary area between Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory, FCT on Sunday. The Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer, Ramhan Nansel, who confirmed the development to newsmen on Monday, said the suspect was rescued from being lynched by an angry mob.
