The Ogun State government has confirmed an outbreak of Lassa fever following the death of a 25-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member in Ijebu North Local Government Area.
According to a statement by the Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, the female corps member had fallen ill in Ondo State before being brought to a secondary health facility in Ogun on March 18, 2025. She passed away the same day.
Lassa fever, a viral hemorrhagic disease, presents symptoms such as high fever, headache, sore throat, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pain, and unexplained bleeding.
Coker urged residents to seek medical attention if they experience these symptoms, particularly if a fever does not respond to malaria or antibiotic treatment within 48 hours. She also called on healthcare facilities to strengthen infection prevention measures and report suspected cases to designated disease surveillance officers.
The Ogun State government assured the public of its commitment to disease surveillance and rapid response, with efforts already in place to contain the outbreak through enhanced monitoring and community engagement.
