Image
Fela Durotoye, a former presidential candidate, has condemned the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election by Ibrahim Babangida, saying it had a devastating impact on Nigeria's trajectory as a nation. Durotoye, who was the presidential candidate of the defunct Alliance for New Nigeria, stated that the annulment led Nigerians to conclude that their votes don't count, resulting in electoral apathy. "The annulment of the June 12 election embedded the notion that 'our votes don't count' into the consciousness of the people," Durotoye said. "This has led to a situation where the majority have become the minority, with only a fraction of registered voters participating in elections." Durotoye identified four types of votes - mobilized votes, monetized votes, manufactured votes, and manipulated votes - and noted that these categories were not enough to account for even half of the total registered voters in the 2023 general election.
